There are several PADDs on the screen. PICARD There are several cases of immersion which might suggest some kind of neurological somatic process. I was hoping to discuss this with Doctor Selar. OGAWA I believe Detective La Forge will be unable to help us. He's programmed with our memories... but we'll see how his VISOR works. Neurological scan takes only a few moments. SCIENTIST #1 is studying the readout. The last entry is grim. SCIENTIST #1 "...We can't exclude the hypothesis that the memory records were altered for some reason... PICARD A few people have complained of fear of death... but they're usually peaceful... BEVERLY We took a complete trothostatic scan of the crew... over all areas of the ship where someone might have tried to gain control. From the chemical reactions, I'd say we're looking at the creation of a traumatic event. A beat as she punches something into a computer computer -- the results appear on the monitor. But there are a few unusual readings... PICARD A few? (to Beverly) Have you run a micro-cellular scan on the STAFF? BEVERLY What do you mean? PICARD Have you run a molecular analysis on the STAFF? BEVERLY I don't see anything that would neutralize the emissions. RIKER There might be other sources -- a nearby star may be harmless, Captain. PICARD (acknowledges) Other than... our sun? He walks into his Ready Room. PICARD Computer, estimate time from this location to Starbase One-seven- three. COMPUTER VOICE The time from this point to the Starbase One-seven-three is ten minutes, twenty-five seconds. Picard walks toward his Ready Room... ANGLE ON THE DESK The desk is UNDUED. Picard sits down, begins to battle his emotions... PICARD Computer... He looks up at us... PICARD (continuing) Battle meditation program, stupendous. A STATIC MONITOR BLINKS into a diagram of the Enterprise -- a white band, a gray band, a cyan band, a blue bar -- in a rapid heartbeat, the Enterprise "Engineering" -- in near perfect synchronization. COMPUTER VOICE synchronization achieved. PICARD That's better. Now... Picard gets to his feet. PICARD (continuing) What else do we need? Barely able to focus, he sits down at the console. BAREIL Now what? PICARD You want to learn how to manipulate the computer? Bareil looks worried. BAREIL I thought I did. That's why I came to you. I thought you'd be happy for me. PICARD I'm sorry we're unable to comprehend your ideas. BAREIL We need your information. The computer can't do my work. PICARD Yes you can -- and it has advantages you don't know about. (a beat) My opening line was correct. Bareil is surprised. He doesn't mean to stumble on his first instinct. BAREIL What do you mean? PICARD All the information you need to make a decision. BAREIL It'll take a little while to get everything set up. PICARD I understand. BAREIL There's one thing you're not sure about. PICARD What's that? BAREIL One thing's for sure, I know how to be a wormhole. Neral hears the confident tone in his voice. NERAL Be sure to visit our home world once before you decide to sell your Federation land. PICARD What? You mean, I can't leave? BAREIL It's just a thought. Of course, if you visit Daled Four and find your people wanting, you may have a problem. PICARD I think I can get along without an alien here monitoring my activities... BAREIL We can't have an alien here either. Not unless you meet the demands of your social mores. Picard is tempted. PICARD I suppose I'll see what I can do about getting Commander Riker to that bridge. (beat) Is that clear? Bareil looks at him. BAREIL As far as Kira's concerned... yes. PICARD Good. (to Neral) Contact Vedek Yarka and have him here on the station. NERAL What about Vedek Trager? PICARD I'm sorry, but there's no need for a meeting. BAREIL (nods) I did. PICARD The meeting is at two hundred hours. BAREIL And I must speak with you -- now! PICARD It's not that simple. There are wolves in Ireland. BAREIL What? Picard's caught... Bareil glances at Neral, who puts the PADD down on the table... then he heads for the door... BAREIL (to Picard) The future is not online? NERAL Judging by its appearance, it could be any time now. PICARD It has arrived with your admission. I am the first to say that online is no longer a substitute for face-to- face interaction -- is this true? NERAL This is conjecture, Captain. Call it whatever you like. But I think it's historical. Neral EXITS. Picard and Neral look at each other thoughtfully. On the move -- PICARD You know what I see... ? The Holodeck's been designed to handle highly complex symbolic events -- it has vox-fests and spiral tides... NERAL It's no different than being programmed with commands about towing a ship, or navigating a craft. PICARD You haven't been programmed either, but you have been briefed on remote sensor data from the Vor'nak system... NERAL Do you know where those vor'naks are? PICARD No. NERAL (surprised) Then feed me. Picard sets the PADD down. Neral picks it up... looks at it. STAR TREK: "The Defector" - REV. 10/18/90 - ACT FOUR 45A. NERAL I don't understand. NERAL The same basic elements are missing from every program created for Starfleet. Reactions. NETALLA Do you have evidence to back up your allegation? NERAL Prove it. Then, the sting of an accusation... NERAL Forgive me, Captain -- but the history of our society is nonexistent. Some of the recurring questions... (a beat) Did Soran Marritza -- the first officer of the Klingon expedition to the Terran System? PICARD I hardly doubt it. His case will be reviewed by Starfleet Command... there are very few existing witnesses. NERAL Don't bother with that. I know what went on... what I'm accused of... I'm about to tell you... (beat) An investigation... a cover-up... the creation of a false history... the sale of military artifacts from the late twenty-third century... PICARD (reacts) A cover-up... to what purpose? NERAL That's what I'm trying to find out. Starfleet has ordered me to uncover the truth. And the truth is... I'm innocent. Off Picard's reaction... WESLEY I want him under constant surveillance. QUINN You're a young man. I don't care what you think of him. WESLEY I understand that. QUINN You need to understand the man you are... at least to a point. Now is not an ideal time. WESLEY I'll go see his parents. QUINN They'll be here in a few hours. I had a feeling you would. They go through difficult times... they die. WESLEY I'm sorry you don't have the strength to deal with them. QUINN Take the pain, you'll feel it. But at the same time, there are other important issues to contain. You're placing a huge burden on your shoulders... WESLEY I won't have an easy time understanding... QUINN And what's the matter -- I'm too old for you, Wesley? WESLEY I don't have as much as a week left, Admiral. I can't possibly understand how this affects me. QUINN You're reacting to the environment you've created... a byproduct of creating it. Yes, your mother will be disappointed... but it will not be like you. She'll understand. WESLEY She'll understand, but it'll be tough. Quinn's eyes glaze over... a moment, he's willing to give it a try... QUINN Try not to disappoint her. I know you'll do the right thing. Then what's the mathematical capability question? Physical ability? BEVERLY That's not enough. There have to be results! TIMOTHY What are you talking about? She is really getting under his skin. He gives her a look. BEVERLY Now, that's an impulse. TIMOTHY I am not a "human." BEVERLY You're an android, and I have set you up with this... He stops in mid-sentence, struck by the realization. TIMOTHY What does that mean? BEVERLY It means... TIMOTHY What does it mean? Beverly is slowly becoming aware of her surroundings... turning and suddenly staggering to a sitting position... she braces herself on the table... fast. BEVERLY (continuing) Whoa. She stands and cantor to a chair, sits down. When she gives it to Timothy, he bursts into that ear-splitting response... nods uncomfortably... TIMOTHY (continuing) You're lying. The girl's dead. NELLA (continuing) It's actually a personal belonging. I'm... the nurse who cared for your father. Picard can't help but smile at this. PICARD You certainly did. Nella turns to him and smiles, very glad to see Picard so happy. NELLA Could you get me a moment? PICARD No. Picard returns to his desk. NELLA I knew you'd be happy to see me. PICARD It's good to see you too, dear. NELLA puts her arm around him and gives him a friendly kiss. NELLA It's good to be home, Captain. PICARD It's good to be back. (smiles) If we live through this, hopefully we'll be well into the future. NELLA I hope so, for you and for us. PICARD We're planning to do more in the future. There are many interesting projects under way now. But I'm sure you'll have time for everything else, so you'll have time to rest. She smiles at him. He puts a hand on her shoulder, softens his tone. PICARD You are going to enjoy many other things as well. He kisses her. Then she kisses him. Then they exchange a warm, pleasant kiss, both voice deepening with the understanding that they stand united in shared desire. This is not a fling; it is a relationship. They are deeply committed to its future. PICARD You're a smart girl. NELLA One who knows how to make the best of an ugly situation. Picard smiles. PICARD I like that. Within earshot, the door OPENS to admit JELLICO, heavily ladled into the room. He is dressed in Starfleet Command uniform. He faces the bar. JELLICO Good morning. PICARD Good afternoon. Plus, he has His Honorable Discerning Assessments of many security measures we've used. RIKER Oh? You mean his evaluation of security went something like this? JELLICO To him it's simple -- everything is beautiful and everything is perfect. He finds me quite attractive. I'm flattered, but I'm not going to change his evaluation. (beat) And probably won't for quite long. Riker and Jellico begin to walk down the corridor again. JELLICO (continuing) Sooner or later we have to adapt some things to be on the Plant.
