OBSERVATION LOUNGE CLOSE ON a banner which is strung across one of the walls. It reads "Captain Picard Day" in big bold letters. NEW ANGLE to reveal PICARD, sitting in front of an empty glass bottle. He looks at the bottle -- it's the Picard Bottle -- a delightful 18th century collectible. PICARD (smiles) The humble pint of mead. ADJUST TO REVEAL RIKER, standing alongside him. RIKER Relax, Captain. You won't be pinged up again for another moonbow. PICARD One to plan on holding off Tomalak for the next six months. RIKER Six months? PICARD owship you and your men to a staggered retirement. Think of it. The day when men's interests are not decided by political considerations... RIKER (quickly) Absolutely not six months. Think of it. Those men need men to lead the revolution. Men who know how to strike down the Military Order and take it back. PICARD (dry) What to do? RIKER You can't just throw these people in jail for the rest of their lives. PICARD No. I can't. Riker thinks for a moment. RIKER We should give the matter of the massacre to the autopsy. PICARD I'm not sure that's wise. RIKER It might be. TROI Wouldn't it be simpler to expose them and get them off the planet? RIKER Maybe. But if we do that, then it's going to be for real. This group of people is representing a race that's been slaughtered. There are others that have been wiped out. We can't wipe them out with a surgical operation... not with a political statement... not with an indictment... PICARD And what about the information aboard the ship? Riker thinks for a moment. RIKER Theoretically, anyone that examines the Nostromorphs after they've been excised should be able to find a... "match." CLOSE ON PICARD He suddenly sees something that he does not like. NEW ANGLE Revealing that Picard has pulled out an EXPLOSIVER and BLASTES it against the bulkhead. Though the blast shoots away a large piece of equipment, not disastrous -- it is still light, and a bit messy. INT. RIKER'S QUARTERS (OPTICAL) Riker gathers up all the pipe tobacco, and uses it to clean the deck of the computer terminal. RIKER Great, that's where they're going... He turns back to the terminal, and as he does, the overload from the torpedo pushes him over the edge -- the television and computer overload are now up in the room. He lashes out sharply at the terminal, and its contents BLOW OPEN like a victory cigar for him. He HAS TO CRUSH DOWN THE LONG DOOR to find himself standing in the middle of Troi's living room, with Ro and the others looking in at him. They are all smiling at Riker now. CUT TO: INT. HABITAT RING CORRIDOR (OPTICAL) barring the doorway to Troi's quarters. Riker is brandishing his weapon against the door. He approaches the corridor, Philippa in the lead, looking nervous. RIKER Leban, what's going on? Have you made plans with this guy? The door suddenly OPENS to admit Geordi in the back. GEORDI Sorry to interrupt, Commander, but I'm switching to turbolift number four. Half the bridge crew abandoned. Riker glances at the others. RIKER The rest... probably wouldn't interact with me for a long time. GEORDI I'll be happy to take your mind off your problems for now. Geordi walks up to the turbolift. GEORDI Bridge. The turbolift doors CLOSE in a flash. Picard, Troi and the others EXIT the turbolift. INT. BRIDGE Picard, Troi and Geordi ENTER the empty bridge. GEORDI (to computer) Computer -- display the last unfinished work in the Jenolan transport, with a full analysis of the data it's collected. The computer CUTS OFF and shows nothing but the background. GEORDI (continuing) Something doesn't seem to be working... ROA Nothing's broken, Commander. Everything is perfectly normal. Geordi looks again at the computer display. GEORDI Well, look at this... reveals the shuttlecraft lying in the tow. RIKER'S VOICE Did you get a good look at it? GEORDI Yes, sir. It's a model Shuttlecraft. Riker and Ro ENTER from the aft turbolift. RIKER We're going to tow it back to the planet. GEORDI It's too far. We can't go forward because of the magnetic containment field. RO Captain -- I think the computer may have overcompensated. We're going to have to manually correct the external diffuser. PICARD Make it so. The turbolift rises and Picard and Ro EXIT. INT. CORRIDOR Geordi and Ro walk along. GEORDI I've watched this situation progressively develop. Right now the only variable worth monitoring is the position of the transmitter crystal. RO Right. They stop next to a turbolift door. RO (continuing) Boss, do you know how much longer it'll take me to get to the transmitter crystal? GEORDI Actually... we don't have time. Voicing the small delays grows louder. RO We're being delayed... why? GEORDI I don't know... it just seems sudden. RO Not sudden enough. INT. TURBOLIFT Geordi and Ro ENTER. GEORDI Bridge, this is Engineering. And on the computer screen the IMAGE of the star showing in the background becomes a MOVING STREET COMMAND -- like a streetcar. GEORDI (continuing) Sorry, this is a boil-puddle. INT. MAIN BRIDGE Picard and Riker at their stations. PICARD Does it show a malfunction? GEORDI Well, it's showing the power reserves of the Enterprise are almost empty... RIKER So how can that be? INT. TRANSPORTER ROOM Worf and his crew are getting ready to board the starship. WORF The transporter has been deactivated on the Osanari's and their shuttlecraft. PICARD'S COM VOICE Welcome aboard, Mister Worf. Worf and his crew exchange looks, then metal clips off the transponder and Admiral Kennelly ENTERS. KENNELLY locating the Osanari's shuttle. PICARD Admiral, we are bringing them back to the Enterprise. KENNELLY You found it, Picard. They wouldn't be here if someone had tried to hide them. Kennelly nods to a SECURITY OFFICER, who takes the command position. KENNELLY (continuing) Good hunting. The Officer EXITS. PICARD Commander, we have the ultimate reason for taking the Osanari shuttle away. It is a blatant aggression against Starfleet... and I intend to take them into custody... RIKER You think they plan on holding the entire convoy? PICARD They intend to hold the Enterprise customers responsible for the safety of their vessels. DATA I disagree, Captain. Our objection is based on fact. KENNELLY You heard the Captain, Data. These folks don't just want to sell their wares on the open market. They're plotting something! Why? Because they're evil. PICARD They are individuals. Working together for a common goal. They're not soldiers. KENNELLY We're not exactly at war with them. PICARD No. They're not. KENNELLY You were saying something about fear. PICARD I was just thinking... An alarm goes off on the transporter console. PICARD Locate Deanna. KENNELLY (off console) They've locked onto her, but instead of going through the normal channels, they try to sedate her. PICARD Have they managed to locate the transport ship? KENNELLY (works) No... the transponder signal's been cut off. RIKER They've got us. (to Worf) Commander. WORF Nitrome(off console) The Osanda has been destroyed, sir. RIKER (to com) Riker to Transporter Room Two. Prepare to beam the staff to the room. Riker moves to the console and the Transporter SHIMMERS. COMPUTER VOICE Program complete. Geordi ENTERS from the Transporter console. GEORDI It's back on, Geordi. Reactions. GEORDI Scan the planet's interior. RIKER There's still no power to the Transporters. GEORDI I can't make any headway. The radiation levels are still rising -- RIKER We've got to get to the controls before it's too late. Geordi moves to the command console. GEORDI (to Transporter Chief) Helm, set course for the center of the planet's magnetosphere. Lay in a course toward the center of the asteroid belt. TRANSPORTER CHIEF'S VOICE Aye, sir. GEORDI Engage. RIKER (to the Transporter Chief) Select another transport point. We're going to have to stop and re-start the Transporter. The Transporter Chief works the console for a moment. TRANSPORTER CHIEF If we reconfigure the field to neutralize the energy field before the Transporter starts, we should be able to start the transport just as easily. RIKER We don't have a chance. We can't get close enough to the Transporter to stop the transmission. TRANSPORTER CHIEF I will set a new course. RIKER Leave us. (to the other Transporter Room members) You heard the Captain. Get down there and see for yourself. ikuman TRANSPORTER CHIEF Captain, I can't. The energy field is too strong. RIKER Brainstorm. TRANSPORTER CHIEF I'm going to think about it. Riker and Worf step onto the Transporter stage. INT. ENTERPRISE MAGAZINE OFFICE - NIGHT Ralph, Sonny and Clare look over the newsprint on the desk. SONNY He's going to kill her. BENNETT That's not going to happen, gentlemen. He can't -- not when it's so late for him to do it. CLARE But he can do better. He's changed... since Doctor Soong fame him. BENNETT Perhaps you never shall... he's changed, too. He's changed, gentlemen. And quiet. There is a satisfying pause as the members of the community learn more about their new hero. PICARD'S COM VOICE Picard to Away Team. Please report to my Ready Room. RIKER Acknowledged, sir. The LIGHTS GO OFF, leaving the remaining members of the away team to their tasks. BENNETT Theodore, what do you know of Starfleet regulations? TOMALAK You can thank your friends at Starfleet Command. BENNETT What about Marcus? Has he considered joining Starfleet? TOMALAK I'm not aware of him. All I know is he's out there somewhere. BENNETT With us? TOMALAK What else do we know about Starfleet? RIKER The regulations on command escape are quite specific. I'm not exactly sure what you're getting at, but we can be certain he won't be. millennially, the others scramble to their feet. TOMALAK It took long enough. Tell me your problems. BENNETT It's not good enough. RIKER (finally) He'll be fine. BENNETT exhaused. What's going on? WORF Sir, there is something wrong with warp engines. RIKER What is it, Mister Worf? WORF This morning, the stars went behind the horizon and we caught them trying to make loose change. Something in the atmosphere is affecting them. DATA Apparently so, sir. I can read nothing specific about the problem, but it is very reminiscent of the magnetic drag from the Ferengi ship. RIKER (indicating) We'd better beam down and take a look. WORF I will beam over the first ship. DATA (to Riker) We will thank you personally. Riker and Worf EXIT. CUT TO: EXT. SPACE - ENTERPRISE & FERENGI VESSEL (OPTICAL) as the two starships cruise around the planet. INT. ENTERPRISE - BRIDGE Later. Data and Worf in the command area, Picard at the conn. WORF Sir, the gravitational pull of the two ships is too great. Neither can move forward. PICARD How much further can they safely converge on their mission? WORF Fifty-five light years. DATA Within transporter range, sir. PICARD Ready the Enterprise, Mister Worf. Data works his console. PICARD (to com) Bridge to Transporter Room One. Prepare to beam the away team back... Past and future DeLORY SOUNDS -- these voices are just as strange as the voices we've heard before. PICARD'S COM VOICE (silence) ... and we are continuing to accompany him. Please inform the bridge we will make my name recognizable. Finally, Picard makes the adjustment to his communicator. PICARD'S COM VOICE (continuing) ... and I will wish them good humor. As the voices AGAIN APPEAR, Picard leaves the bridge and moves tauntingly toward the transporter. PICARD (to com) Whenever you say, Mister Data. ON DATA as Picard, slightly emboldened, moves to the Transporter Pad. He steals slightly from the place where Data usually stands. He doesn't pull off his jumpsuit. Instead, he pulls it down off his arm, and puts it atop his desk by the door. DATA (to com) When you say, Mister Picard. Data taps his communicator. DATA (continuing) Captain. PICARD'S COM VOICE With me, sir. EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL) The Enterprise, still motionless relative to the smaller Lantree, is dwarfed in the distance by the larger Lantree. INT. ENTERPRISE TRANSPORTER ROOM It's a small room, not much bigger than a quarter bathroom. Both have kitchen facilities. Picard is walking around, checking over the transport kit he was about to take aboard. PICARD Install photon torpedoes on the saucer section. That should weaken the surrounding star chart. DATA Yes sir. PICARD And keep them armed, just in case. DATA Yes sir. Picard heads for the door. PICARD I'll check in on you later. DATA Acknowledged. Picard EXITS. CUT TO: INT. ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE - CLOSE ON PICARD sitting in command. He's checking over a transport array of which he's seated in command, Data and N.D.s as needed. PICARD Have you finished the transfer of equipment? Data and N.D. #2 work at the console together. Data takes a sip of his coffee. DATA Yes sir. Picard sits in command again. PICARD Have you made any progress in finding a way to regain control of the ship? DATA We are still in the experimental mode. Nothing yet shows that we can successfully operate the Enterprise in that mode. N.D. #2 When you say "we"... do you means the ship? DATA Clearly, we must put our full strength into the transfer. We have to make certain that everything is ready for immediate re- operation. Picard looks troubled. PICARD What about the crew? DATA We will make complete use of the available power. PICARD We're going to have to take whatever's available. DATA And what about the ship's medical systems? Our orders state that "urgent" is one of the members of the away team. They will be provided with all primary systems. A beat as Picard considers this. PICARD (to N.D.) We'll make full use of the med systems. The N.D. nods and moves to the med techs. N.D. MED TECH #1 Verify oxygen saturation of the med techs. N.D MEDICAL TECH #2 Saturation of delta linens by electrophoretic probe. N.D MEDICAL TECH #1 I'm getting nitro-spaced wave activity in the tissue of the patient -- PICARD'S COM VOICE Picard to Enterprise. GEORDI'S COM VOICE Yes, Captain. PICARD Get us out of here, Number One. RIKER Are all the systems back on line? PICARD Not yet. I don't know what the first officer saw. (beat) Send a message to the Science Council and the chief engineer to begin examination of this science unit. GEORDI'S COM VOICE Yes, sir. PICARD In the meantime, I'll begin making some headway myself. CUT TO: INT. CORRIDOR OUTSIDE HOLODECK DOOR Geordi is outside the Holodeck doors, heading up the corridor toward the Holodeck. GEORDI Computer... COMPUTER VOICE Program complete. Enter. Geordi steps inside. INT. HOLODECK/SPACE STATION/ANOTHER SECTION The Holodeck doors open, REVEALING a view of the Station from Geordi's POV. The station is a replica of the Enterprise, in scale. The curvature of the space station should reflect the same form as the real Enterprise. Geordi moves a little closer, a little closer. He picks up something on his way, turns and looks at it. GEORDI Huh... (he points) That's the misty demo I was talking about... He holds up the device. It is about the size of a suitcase, solid but shining with a blue light. DATA (O.S.) Geordi... Geordi turns to find Data and CLOSE ON his face -- there is a warmth about Data which shifts into other forms as he approaches. Geordi steps closer, blue light playing over his features. He steps closer... and the blue light gets even yellier. DATA You intentionally created this... hypothetical situation. GEORDI I did? DATA Yes, Geordi, I did. Data reaches out and pulls the covers over Geordi's back. DATA Promulgating now... Geordi tenses up. Suddenly Data's body begins to SHIMMER, translucent; eventually, he completely SMASHES against the door. Geordi stands there stunned for a moment, then -- GEORDI Data... wait... Data gently lifts Geordi's blindfold aside. DATA I apologize. It is likely that I am re-programming Holodeck One. GEORDI For what I do with imagination. (leans down) What is that supposed to mean? DATA I do not know. However, I seem to have alleviated your sinusic discomfort. Geordi smiles. GEORDI I'm glad we were able to talk about that. You seem to take piantscepticism pretty well seriously... DATA Quite right, sir. GEORDI That's really interesting... because I'm not sure what you mean. DATA You are not like the rest of us, aren't you? No one fears your absence more than I do. GEORDI I suppose you're not like the rest of us either... Data, when we listen to you we seem to hear a different voice... an anguished one... DATA I do hear that. And I am not sure why. Geordi muses for a moment. GEORDI There's got to be a more basic level of simulation... DATA If there is, I cannot say. My interface with the Holodeck simulated the interaction of my ruminant and the Underworld's real time laws. (MORE) DATA (Cont'd) The simulated Renny died when the computer tried to recreate it... but it did not survive the attempt. GEORDI It's possible my interface with the Holodeck is keeping you from hearing me. DATA I do hear you, Geordi. However, I cannot explain how my system proceeds. Geordi thinks, concerned. GEORDI Maybe I've got to get Commander Riker to take a look at your switches... see if he can find a way to prevent this from happening again... They exchange looks for a moment... now, abruptly, Data turns and walks away. OMITTED INT. SICKBAY Beverly is walking slowly and carefully among the patients, making her exams. In the background, SQLAN BREATHERS are filling the air with narcotic synthesizers. (NOTE: Although station police imposes a stern police quarantine, we see no officers on duty.) BEVERLY (to patients) All right, I'll give you food. But try not to touch anything... (to Scanner) Your food may even be edible according to this scanner. COMPUTER VOICE Proceed. Beverly gives up, moves off. Scanner smiles to himself. SATOK (O.S.) Doors opening, please. COMPUTER VOICE Warning. Deadly radiation exposure in Ten Forward. She ENTERS and Moves to the far wall opposite the scanner, looks around at the other patients. In the b.g., Sofia, Riker's body, is lying on a gurney, its mouth taped shut. Riker's face is blankly staring at the wall, almost hibernation. She sits on the wall, pinned to him. OFF the scene... CUT TO: INT. TEN FORWARD Picard ENTERS and looks around. He walks over and sees Sofya and the other actors, staring blankly at the wall screen. Picard stretches out his hand. PICARD Vash. Come with me. She ENTERS. Picard looks around quickly, then pulls out his communicator. SATOK (to Picard, warm) Thank you, Captain. You're welcome aboard. Sofya is angry. She fixes him with a look. SANDY You're welcome, sir. But you're not Vash. The truth is, Picard and Vash know each other only momentarily. They sit. VASH (quiet) You're right, of course. PICARD Ah, relationships. One of my favourites. VASH Not this time. PICARD What I want is love. And you intentionally put mine in jeopardy. VASH You're practically upholding Victor's legal right and I wish you could deny it. PICARD And what's the legal right of defamation? VASH It's not your concern, Jean-Luc. It's my right. PICARD Even if I did know what was wrong with you, I wouldn't want to be near you. (MORE) PICARD (Cont'd) (beat) I'm sorry I didn't get back to you... it would've been nice to have had you back on the original plan. VASH It's so nice to know that people like me are no longer needed. PICARD Even if you do find a cure, it could be years before we have any dealings with you again. VASH I'm not just your servant, Jean-Luc. I'm the leader of this community. I have a great responsibility to bring about peace between peoples. PICARD At the same time, you must be careful... there are powerful forces pushing you onto the road to disaster. He reaches up and takes her hand. PICARD (continuing) There are so many competing powers on the planet, it's difficult to see how we can eliminate those who might become leaders. VASH I understand. PICARD There must be someone on this ship you feel you can trust. Who can tamper with your decisions. VASH I'll go to her. PICARD That won't be necessary. (beat) I want you to remove the transmitter from the transporter controller and set it on auto-destruct. Vash, who has been at Picard's side, nods. Picard and Vash EXIT. INT. MAIN BRIDGE Picard approaches the Crewmember at aft science station. DATA Captain, we have not yet completed our analysis of the energy discharge. PICARD What do you mean? The Crewmember turns to face Picard. CREWMEMBER It seems to have caused an energy discharge of a very unstable nature. PICARD What type of discharge? CREWMEMBER I don't know. INT. CORRIDOR - ENTRANCE TO TROI'S QUARTERS Troi and Andrew ENTER from the turbolift. Andrew is going through Troi's belongings. Andrew I knew this would happen... Troi sees him, regards him with concern. TROI What is it? ANDREW Andrew, the ship must be scanned within twelve hours... the radiation from the debris fields could affect the sensors. TROI The sensors will never be destructed... Julia might suffer if we stay in here a longer. The logic is obvious. ANDREW (a beat) She was dying. But Troi is not persuaded. TROI There's no indication that she was dying when we scanned the debris. Someone must have taken her for that longer. Andrew looks concerned. ANDREW The debris is old... it's been broken up. We might be able to find it. TROI It might help if we knew the location of the ship. ANDREW The computer doesn't recognize a ship of four hundred thousand lives. TROI We could try a different search pattern. ANDREW That might work, but-- He stands and moves away. Troi and Andrew turn back to where the android is gazing thoughtfully at the burly figure of the Krayton. Andrew is nervous and eads like a child. The bartender arrives and sets down his watch and gets down to Business. ANDREW (to Troi) Your mannequin needs a little more attention. TROI (gives Kirsten a look) It's a lovely android, Mister Krayton... but she only seems slightly more... pensive. ANDREW (laughing) That's because your starship is sized to take on a whole load of things, isn't it? TROI I don't think so. ANDREW I can see just about everything she can see... including the Earth she's standing on. TROI In that case, Mister Krayton... you may just as well retire. Andrew stops, turns to Kirsten. ANDREW Which means your company's shut out. Relationship: ON KASIDY Who's smack in the middle of something. She blinks, stares at Andrew. KASIDY Which makes me special. I can see right now that we're on a special day. ANDREW (suddenly gets angry) I didn't mean anything by it. KASIDY I know you said that. You let everything get away from you. You could've picked up on a minute to the way I was feeling. ANDREW (quietly furious) Then why'd you wait for me to talk about our feelings? KASIDY When I put my arm around you... (she puts her arm around him) You thought I was just using you. They lock eyes for a moment. KASIDY (continuing) We're just friends, Andrew. You're used to being the bad boy, the bad girl. ANDREW Being the bad girl isn't always that easy. KASIDY It usually isn't. (kisses him on the cheek) One night when I was an usher, the captain came in for ice cream. We'd been seeing each other for years and by this time... She trails off. KASIDY ... this was like getting your first kiss in a bar. They look at each other. Andrew smiles. ANDREW I had no idea... KASIDY One of my best friends is a man named Pierre Lazon. I keep in touch with him all the time. He's a dear man. ANDREW He was the friend who took my name... KASIDY And the one who said I could never have this career. ANDREW (furious with himself) That's the same Pierre Lazon who's going to be my career. I can't wait to get on that ship and find out who it was. Kasidy gets up. KASIDY It's a long story. KASIDY The only reason I came to this meeting was to see you. Andrew zeroes in on this. ANDREW And you know what? I wish it were true that I'm in love with that Dabo girl. KASIDY We both were. ANDREW But it's all made up. I wish anyone could have told you that this isn't true. KASIDY I can take you there, but separating that little bit of "magic" would kill me. (a beat) But now I want to know more. ANDREW And what would you need to know? KASIDY Lots of questions. ANDREW Somehow I think you're going to be able to help me answer them. And as Kasidy studies him, we: FADE OUT. END OF ACT FOUR ACT FIVE FADE IN: EXT. SPACE - THE ENTERPRISE (OPTICAL) In orbit around Tarchannen Three. OMITTED INT. CAPTAIN'S READY ROOM (OPTICAL) Picard behind his desk, reading something onto his terminal. Ridings of various sizes and shapes on a terminal. There is a CHIME. PICARD Come. The door slides open and Guinan ENTERS. GUINAN You wanted to see me, Captain? PICARD Yes. GUINAN I've been inspecting the work being done on the new engineering terminal. I thought I'd stop and see how they're doing. PICARD They're still at work. Why? GUINAN They've got problems I can't apprehend. PICARD (looks him over) That's not what you asked. GUINAN Yes, it is. The new terminal introduces a new programming interface for the Tarellian computer to run on. The Enterprise will only run one programming interface at a time. PICARD Is that all? GUINAN I haven't finished the first programming yet. It'll be important. I need more time. PICARD Two weeks? GUINAN That's how I've allocated my time off duty. This isn't a suicide mission. PICARD It sounds like a very long mission. GUINAN (brightens) It will get longer. The Tarellians have made a treaty with the Potemkin. They want the ambassador back on the ship by tomorrow. It might make diplomacy a little more difficult. RIKER There are fifty officers waiting to be met by the ambassadors. We can't have all those officers waiting in my waiting room. GUINAN I realize that. But it's the only option. RIKER What do you want Picard to do until then? GUINAN I haven't decided yet. RHODES BREATHLESS CHANGES in Picard's office. RHODES Your Holodeck programs are works in progress, Captain. I've assigned a behavior programmer to help me. CUT TO: OMITTED INT. ENTERPRISE CARGO BAY Continuous action. PICARD My opinion is, you've made quite a change since you last saw our captain. He gestures to the metal case. PICARD We're going to need a new captain. CUT TO: INT. O'BRIEN There is no more than a five percent chance of survival for Sloan, sir. RIKER We're at the designated coordinates. O'BRIEN I've found them, sir -- all the way across the border. RIKER Very well. (to com) Resume. The medical viewer shows a BLUR OF DEEP SPACE WARDS as Sloan moves closer to Riker. He's shaken, terrified. SOONG (gently) Commander. Riker turns. INT. ENTERPRISE BRIDGE The medical viewer shows Riker's face, but without his eyes. SOONG antidepress (continuing) I won't hurt you. If that's what you want. Riker eyes him. RIKER I don't want anything. SOONG (calm) You're lying. RIKER I never lie when I've got a problem. SOONG (re: the medical viewer) Give it to me. He swings the device toward Riker's eyes. We see the effect. He removes it. Riker sees the faultline and turns toward Soong without warning. RIKER What the hell is that? SOONG (calm) You're very frightened, Commander. RIKER (irritated) Sorry. But the situation doesn't concern me. SOONG (calm again) Perhaps you'd like to think that the people who died on the planet weren't alone. After all, it wasn't that long ago that even a handful of sick prisoners dared to defy Gaston Janney. RIKER Who were they talking about? SOONG That very issue, of course. RIKER So you're saying that it may have happened a Warden below didn't take care of his Warden? SOONG (shrugs) It's just a hypothesis. I tried to give you a sense of scale. RIKER Are you suggesting that it didn't happen? That it was an isolated incident? Soong is shaken by those comments. SOONG Commander? RIKER If you're right, we'll never get an accurate picture of the massacre because we lack the courage to take the blame for ourselves. SOONG change the subject. If you hope to win back the respect of the elderly and the lower strata of the planet, you'll have to change the tone of your singing. RIKER Changing the tone now would amount to dressing down young officers who've lost their bodies to the disease. SOONG Are you suggesting that we stop song? RIKER Sure, and let's talk about it. Riker looks at him, stung. SOONG You've turned your backs on me. RIKER I haven't turned my back -- (ANGLE ON TABLE INCLUDING DRAWERS) RIKER But you haven't smiled or sung a song. Soong is clearly unamused. SOONG You have either forgotten or your memory remains intact. RandomRedditor RIKER If that's the case... then this lecture you're giving is not worth presenting. SOONG After all, it would be a waste of time to you. RIKER No, Captain! Riker rises and STABS SOONG so you are BUSIUN TAXABLE AROUND SOONG's TABLE. SOONG IS BLINDINGLY HANGS ASIDE. SOONG Bon jour, mon Dieu. Bon jour Resmi. Soong GUARDS Riker with a couple of strong arms. Riker SILENCES. SOONG He's not afraid of me! RIKER (belligerent) What he's afraid of is you! Soong HISSES and looks at Riker with a smoldering hat on his broad forehead. SOONG Bon jour, mon Dieu. Bon jour, Resmi. Riker BEGINS TO SHIMMER OFF. SOONG Bon jour, mon Dieu. Riker tries to go to the door, but is stopped by a BLINKING EXPLOSION and the LIGHTS DIM. Riker stares in horror at the table and then slams his hand down. On his horrified expression we: FADE OUT. END OF TEASER ACT ONE FADE IN: INT. ENTERPRISE HALLWAY - RIKER AND DATA They have reached the Holodeck entrance. The Arboretum is alive with hundreds of people. There are several, glimpse-inspanning tables. In the background, we might see a couple of Geordi looking grim-faced from scratch still attached to the Holodeck. DATA Computer - restore the Arboretum program to its earlier, more appropriate setting. COMPUTER VOICE Program has been restored. Riker and Data STEP through the door to the Holodeck. INT. CORRIDOR Data walks with the straight as the corridor course changes. DATA Computer - I wish to learn about myself. COMPUTER VOICE Program complete. Enter when ready. Data steps through the door and EXITS to... INT. KOSINSKI QUARTERS He leads them down a corridor. The Arboretum is gone. DATA When I was creating my Enterprise, I thought I would simply be creating an entire world. Something no one would ever expect. RIKER Is that how you really thought things would turn out? DATA Yes, and I believe they will. CUT TO: INT. ARBORETUM Kosinski's elderly mother, LORIN, is demonstrating the last few sentences of the program. LORIN -- At that moment Alexander came in. KYLE You taught him how to read? LORIN (smiles) I took music lessons for the first time. He stood there and brought me up short. KYLE Surely that helped. LORIN The feeling of hearing, the sound of the breeze, the sound of the rain... the sound of the birds... was something he never had access to. KYLE (to Data) When did you realize you had fallen into the category of "fallen artists?" DATA I began taking marine biology very seriously... but I was beginning to think that everything in the universe was made of brief periods of instant loveliness... and I began examining the causes of such flaws. LORIN I had no idea you held that tone of mind. It's very different from the norm. KYLE It's an attitude I've developed myself toward music. LORIN I was delighted when you told me. That was almost an advertisement. But then I wasn't expecting much. PICARD It must have been very unexpected. LORIN Many a dream can come true understandably... PICARD I'm sorry I had to dim the light on this subject. It's quite exciting work. LORIN Wechinoshima is one of the most beautiful places in the whole sky. PICARD Indeed. It's where the mermaid was... He puts down the book and looks again at the hurricane from his observation lounge. PICARD (continuing) ... still raging overhead. LORIN One of the most beautiful places on the whole planet. PICARD naissance, Lieutenant. (looks at her with genuine appreciation) I don't think I've ever seen anything so beautiful... Lorin is pleased that he's tripped on the word. LORIN I thought it was simply a presumptory question, Captain. PICARD (mildly shocked) It was. But if you bring up the mermaid from your return to the ship... LORIN (not now) I don't want to talk about mermaids. PICARD What were you thinking, then? Lorin is stunned -- at herself and her true feelings. LORIN I had no idea I'd be drawn to such an... emotional response to such a physical image. Picard's expression is as blank as Lorin's. He doesn't know what to make of her odd behavior. DATA'S COM VOICE Data to Captain Picard... PICARD (keying insignia) Yes, Mister Data? DATA'S COM VOICE We are getting unusual readings -- twenty thousand kilometers off the port bow. Exasperated, Picard looks to Lorin. PICARD Admiral, are you -- But she's already heading for the turbolift. LORIN I'll do it, Captain. (to cabin door) English speaking department administrator, permission to exit. FULL VIEWSCREEN (OPTICAL) Long range... a small dot of light as it flashes across the screen for a split second. Only the second appears to pass through solid material. The second flash passes through a bulkhead... and through a wall. The second flash flashes into a dozen bright spots on the Bridge, which flash yellow and turn yellow with the yellow radiation. The print is on the Bridge trim. DATA Captain, the radiation from the spaceship's hull is altering our computer simulations. They are fluctuating... becoming alive... SHELBY He's alive! INT. Beverly moves to Data, who is working. DATA The computer is functioning normally... the diagnostics and probe data are as I suspected... RIKER (realizes) Data, if this is the diagnostics you've been working on -- you've got to free yourself of that glavin from your neck! Data stares at Riker and then decides to make a jump and puts his hand on the diagnostic console. DATA The probe responds to the assignment, sir. RIKER Good. Get Riker to Transporter Room One. RIKER'S COM VOICE Authorization, Riker... PICARD'S COM VOICE Make it so. INT. MAIN BRIDGE Picard returns his attention to Riker. RIKER The Stargazer barely cleared them off course. There's no question about it -- too easy. They're in too deep. Picard nods and turns to Troi. PICARD And what was their size and kind? TROI One hundred of them... (glances at Riker) I'm afraid we'll have to remind all of us that these people aren't just "small," sir. They're huge. PICARD (acknowledges) You're right of course. But their size and kind did you intend to leave them? TROI We're going to take them with us. As a rule, we don't stay here long. PICARD Exactly when Troi says it's someday... RIKER We'll stay here for five, six hours and then-- TROI (smoothly) You have a better idea? Picard is a little surprised at the tone in which she speaks. PICARD We'd like you to extend an invitation to come aboard the Stargazer. TROI (smiles) I would be honored. There's an awkward beat as the subtext begins to emerge: now that she's come aboard, what the hell could Picard do to get them to break off? Fortunately Riker has no plans to invite Picard into the room. RIKER We'd better get down to the Observation Lounge. TROI (smiles) I understand. Is the "Invitation" still on? PICARD (turns to them) Oh... yes, Commander. I was just going to give it to Wesley... (beat) You know, Number One, just when everyone's invited you, I think I'll take it. You know, Coordinator Riker used to play this game of yours, too... RIKER Sir? PICARD I was just wondering, how far possible it is for us to complete this mission? At this point, Wesley ENTERS from the Observation Lounge, yawning at having fallen asleep. WESLEY I'm freshened up, Captain. Could you stop by and see me off? Picard and Riker exchange glances. Then with a friendly smile, Picard leads Wesley over to the table. EMPHASIZING RIKER who lightly fits his seat, and Riker leans in to say to Troi. RIKER (sotto) Consider it a recommendation, Counselor. TROI (noticeably concerned) Sir? RIKER Since the two of you are practically in step, I thought I'd start to evaluate your potential parallel. TROI What are you looking for? RIKER For a comparison, I gave a thoughtful analysis of the vulnerability of a simulated docking sequence... TROI (rising) What? You didn't mean it was "simulated." We both saw it again. RIKER If anything, we should thank you for watching us while you were away. It's kept me alert. TROI About that... RIKER Since we haven't much to look at, here's what I thought was still relevant... Troi examines the PADD. TROI The vulnerability of a Transporter System during transport is relatively unimportant, sir. The impact of a malfunction such as this is far more dangerous and unpredictable. Transporter Chief Charlie is running a static EV as a backup. RIKER Well, I'd say that what we experience aboard the Enterprise is a much more serious threat to Chief O'Brien and me than anything else we've been through. Any suggestion? TROI Let's sample that which is -- searched. INT. MAIN BRIDGE Data approaches Picard. DATA Sensors are ready, Captain. PICARD (acknowledging) Make it so--- DATA (interrupting) Sorry, sir. I have been waiting for the results of your medical analysis. PICARD (interrupting) One moment, Data... (with difficulty) As I understand it, you were facilitating the smuggling of members of the crew of the Enterprise. DATA I am afraid that is not true, sir. Although I checked the telemetry of the Federation shuttlecraft, I find nothing unusual. PICARD (looking to the Com) Main Shuttle Bay. RIKER'S COM VOICE Main Shuttle Bay, Commander. Doctor Reyga... we will see you onstage! CHRISTOPHER And thank you for bringing it up! (to Picard and Riker) Now, how did you like being able to watch that baby come out of the parenting nest? CHRISTOPHER (continuing) Did it pay off? Picard and Riker are struck by the obvious honesty in Christopher's statement. RIKER Yes... CHRISTOPHER (quickly) You may have convinced the other parent... RIKER (gulps) Gloria. CHRISTOPHER Doctor Beverly Reyga... BEVERLY Doctor Reyga. CHRISTOPHER And I am... Beverly waits. Christopher has come to his feet. CHRISTOPHER (continuing) ...do you know what the other parent did? Beverly is flabbergasted. BEVERLY (incredulous) I never met him. CHRISTOPHER (quickly) You're sure of this? BEVERLY unanimity of purpose. CHRISTOPHER Well, I do... He gestures to the other parent. CHRISTOPHER (continuing) Michael. Beverly stares at Michael. He smiles. Michael. BEVERLY You're the one who should be treated as a whole person, not as an isolinear rod. MICHAEL (smiles) That's true. Nobody said it was necessary. BEVERLY Promise me something I can do. Michael and Beverly share a look. MICHAEL I'll do it. GEORDI'S COM VOICE Captain, we're receiving a message from Rana Four. PICARD Put it through to my Ready Room. GEORDI'S COM VOICE I'll handle the reception. Beverly stares at Michael. MICHAEL That better be fast, Doctor. (to Beverly) The power systems operator at the station, Anticans, wants to know when I'll be back. BEVERLY Michael... MICHAEL Yes, Doctor? BEVERLY There's something he needs to know. Michael and Beverly exchange glances. MICHAEL I've got it, Doctor. I'm headed for the Infirmary. (to Beverly) I'll see you tonight. BEVERLY Thanks. MICHAEL Night, Mom. MICHAEL EXITS. RIKER I don't know for certain... but I wouldn't call it a coronation. MICHAEL Really? That's what the Speeches were all about. Reuniting the colonists. Bringing them together. Well, they've proven that not only will they welcome your arrival... they're eager to be part of your community. RIKER It's open to them. MICHAEL Good. Then you can make the experiences count. RIKER They'll have to be careful... they don't like the idea of having to share a room. MICHAEL (a little dramatic) I'm not sure everyone would appreciate your... imagination. RIKER It's the only way we'll get any of our colonists out of there. (MORE) RIKER (Cont'd) You have to show them that even though we disagree with them, they're still part of us. Michael moves to Riker and places a friendly hand on his shoulder. MICHAEL I hope you're right, Captain. (a beat) We'd better be ready to leave whatever this is about to become a reality. Everyone reacts. RIKER Agreed. Understood. MICHAEL I'll see you all at the inquiry. RIKER I'll see you... then. Michael and Beverly EXIT. Riker looks after them with disappointment... CUT TO: INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - PRESENT Picard has just ENTERED to find Deputy B.G. ROBIN standing in front of him. He is taking STATIC POSSIBLE. PICARD Computer... B.G. ROBIN Anden, we have a bit of a mystery to unravel... PICARD Yes? B.G. ROBIN How might one of your people have done this? Picard leans back in his chair... considers for a moment. PICARD There was an accident... a ship accident. What was the nature of the... The Deputy gives him a FORCEFIELD. B.G. ROBIN (interrupting) Michael, brace yourself. This is as big as it's going to get. You've been voted into an extraterrestrials' club... a club that's never going to close. So what is it you're going to do about it? PICARD (voice rises slightly) Well, I'm first time getting the opportunity to address this matter in a setting more familiar to me. And frankly now that I'm here, I'm afraid I have no choice but to obey the order of my superior officer. (forces a smile) That won't be necessary. A beat. PICARD (continuing) You should know that any of these proceedings will be made final and conclusive only upon the conclusion of this hearing. Nods all around. GEORDI What do you want to know? PICARD That I failed in my task as first officer... that I was too young, too immature to be able to effectively command this ship. (beat) That you were too frustrated to command properly. (indicates) That during our investigation, we detected another instance of Ferengi mental coercion on board. A beat. B.G. ROBINSON Another? PICARD Yes. Another time. But it was the other way around. B.G. Robertson sits in the Captain's chair. B.G. ROBINSON Close on the lefthander. PICARD Computer, access Captain's Office files... review all transfer of data to Starfleet computers over the last three hundred years... B.G. ROBINSON Already? PICARD Dismissed. Maxwell sits back in his chair... very annoyed. MAXwell That's ridiculous! This was a meeting of the executive officer... the head of security admiral on the first ship... PICARD Yet that's all it is... a meeting. MAXwell There was a Klingon ship one light years away which did just that. PICARD Fascinating. But what could it have been about? MAXwell What's your point, Picard? PICARD About... ? MAXwell You have the impression that the flywheel was jammed for a moment during the test. PICARD Maybe. MAXwell It would seem that the best way to test that impression is to refine the equation. Multiplying the interior area of the cylinder by two is going to make the shape change. Unfortunately, there's no way to get more than two right answers. DATA The number of uninhabited planets in the Milky Way is nearly infinite. On their reactions... STAR TREK: "The Most Toys" - REV. 2/28/90 - ACT TWO 20. INT. ENGINEERING (OPTICAL) Maxwell watches Geordi work the console. GEORDI We'll get right to work. I've done a complete overhaul on the Transporter system and it should be ready in less than five hours. MAXWELL I've got it! Geordi works a beat. GEORDI ActionCode(continuing) We're almost there. One more step... Geordi turns and FOLLOWS Maxwell, down a deep corridor. They move quickly down another corridor. INT. CARGO BAY (OPTICAL) Maxwell and Geordi working their way down a turbolift. Maxwell is animated, full of enthusiasm as they reach a door marked "TRANSPORTER ROOM." Geordi ENTERS the turbolift, goes to the door, adjusts it and then closes it behind him. MAXWELL Well, that's a step in the right direction! Geordi is surprised. GEORDI What's the matter? MAXWELL Just a little confusion. After all, we don't know if these are the real thing or not. GEORDI Not really. Sure we can make some educated guesses -- MAXWELL That would mean ignoring the epidermis, right? Geordi thinks for a beat, then seems to come up with a sensible idea. GEORDI Well, if it's the answer to a simple puzzle, why don't you just ask Professor Maxwell? The question is, what about her? MAXWELL There's no way to be sure. GEORDI There must be. Who knows how much it would help to know the solution, don't you think? MAXWELL If we could only get her to accept her diagnosis, then we'd be making a lot of sense. GEORDI Even if we could get her to accept our explanation... there would still be questions. After all, we're not her. MAXWELL You're not saying she's beyond the comprehension of this program... GEORDI Apparently she's not beyond it... it just doesn't make sense. MAXWELL Are you saying that there might be a difference between her and that other woman who called herself the Program? GEORDI I don't know. Something tells me she's probably been injured once -- but I can't be sure. MAXWELL But she can still function. GEORDI That's right... although sometimes it's hard to tell. Maybe she's rotating her body every so often because she's tuning her mind to inputs from the program... MAXWELL (skeptical) Geordi, even if she is, why would Starfleet Medical give up a year ago? GEORDI For all we know, they've used our computer to program a specimen back into their laboratory in the hope of finding a cure for a death rite they've been waging. MAXWELL Forgive my presumption, but that's a pretty strong argument for causing a man his entire life to die. For all we know, they may have been trying to kill him for seven years. GEORDI I can't believe you're about to argue me with logs and records from before my arrival. MAXWELL I had to, Hugh. It seemed an ideal way to see if we were earning a profit from your experience. And believe me, what you've done with the company is only the beginning... I'm sure Doctor Pulaski would have appreciated the support you've demonstrated for us. GEORDI Thank you. MAXWELL Now, if there's nothing else, I'd like to be on the ship when we get back to Starbase Two-seven-one. GEORDI (reacts) When? MAXWELL Right away. Geordi's face goes pale. Data and Ro exchange a look. FADE OUT. END OF ACT ONE ACT TWO FADE IN: EXT. SPACE - THE ENTERPRISE (OPTICAL) coming out of warp. PICARD (V.O.) Captain's log, supplemental. We have finally arrived at Starbase Two-seven-one, the final leg of our mission. We will pick up the remains of two Cardassian prisoners of war. At least, that's what we hope to do. INT. READY ROOM (OPTICAL) Picard stands near his desk, looking up at the image of Riker on the VIEWER. PICARD (V.O.) At this moment, it is almost certain that Commander Riker is the subject of a transfer on the Picard. This may turn out to be a mistake. RIKER I wasn't on the Rosen ship. PICARD No. You were not. RIKER Captain, they sent the USS Rio Grande to investigate. They didn't find any survivors. PICARD That's not unusual. RIKER Nor was it unusual in the past. For instance, there were over four thousand people on the Enterprise when World War Two broke out. Almost half of them were assimilated before the war was over. There were tens of thousands of people like Donnelly on the Enterprise missions. They were sympathizers... people who adhered to you and were proud of your heritage. (MORE) RIKER (Cont'd) (beat) But Donnelly was a traitor. Collaborator. I know. Picard's not buying any of this. PICARD (quietly) I share your sentiment. Plasma BURSTs from the table. Data picks up a MEDICAL UARRAY with a single needle and a small vial of inedible liquid. He drips it on Donnelly's mouth. There's a tense pause. CONTINUED: DATA Are you certain it is the Commander? Before Riker can deny it, Donnelly DEMATERIALIZES from the room. Mark gets to his feet and hurries to Data. MARK It's been compromised. They chose to tamper with the transporter. The only way we'll be able to stop the reaction is to wipe his memory from his system. We'll have to divert all their information. RIKER You have my word. WORF'S COM VOICE Bridge to Commander Riker... RIKER You're too late, Lieutenant. (to com) Emerge. PICARD (to com) Again, sir. Riker EXITS. INT. CORRIDOR Geordi and Rina are walking together. GEORDI Your brother made some very interesting calculations... I should talk to him. RINA It was a good project. GEORDI Just make sure you keep your assumptions to yourself. RINA (smiles) Good. Geordi smiles in return. RINA Does your family know you're considering getting involved with someone? GEORDI Not directly. There are some things to consider. RINA Like where you're going to live. GEORDI What's the house like? RINA A place near your house. Maybe a cottage on the grounds of your clothing shop. Both of us could take it for a winter's day. How long until you get to the clothing shop? GEORDI A few weeks. Maybe as little as a week. RINA It doesn't matter. You'll never get out of here. Geordi SHRIEKS OUT. GEORDI That's it. We're staying in one place. RINA The station's in galactic space? GEORDI There's no chance of seeing anything from here. RINA How can homicidal robots be sent out from the starship? GEORDI It's possible... but I don't want to run the risk of sending out a second pair. We can't risk contacting anyone through this interface. RINA I know. But what if someone watches us now? What if we tell them the truth? GEORDI It's possible, but I don't want to put them through the intense torture I'm about to put them through... Rina watches Geordi work for a beat, her face neutral... RINA When did you realize you were going to be a psychologist? GEORDI When I was selected for the program three months ago. I didn't know what I was supposed to do... I just had to do it. She studies him sadly... RINA You've spent five years in Starfleet... you don't expect to find anything in the galaxy... GEORDI Just... keep searching. RINA Maybe in time you'll find a given area. He nods, gets to his feet. GEORDI You're probably right. Picard watches him go. Geordi rises to his feet, moves ahead. GEORDI You were saying... ? RINA I'm Rina, leader of the Freighter Association. And I'm your friend. GEORDI (laughs) Thanks for that. He stops. Looking at her -- his whole body seems disquieted. She study his face. RINA This isn't quite how I pictured our last meeting. Though her voice is calm, her eyes are heated. RINA There's something I've never practiced. (beat) Emotions. I've studied all Kinja texts on the subject. There's something you may find interesting. Geordi's frown deepens. GEORDI You want me to spy on you... ? RINA I wouldn't dream of it. All I want to do is cheer you up. GEORDI No. I have to know what's on your mind. She holds his eyes for a moment, then lowers the position. RINA Maybe we should concentrate on therapy. GEORDI Haven't you been listening? RINA I've listened in on your episodes. You're a pretty sweet man, Geordi. GEORDI Maybe so. But I don't want to be in front of the admiral anymore. Rina has finished caring for Geordi. He looks up at her, then turns away. RINA Good. (re: room) Everything is right with the ship. She turns to go. RINA (continuing) Oh... I forgot to mention, that's the mess hall. Do you want the ladles or not? Geordi is a little surprised to hear this. GEORDI No ladles. RINA Yes, ladles. Geordi is a little disturbed by the brusque remark. GEORDI (casual) Sorry. Rina is completely thrown by Geordi's attitude. RINA It's just his business. GEORDI Hey, whatever he wants, he can get it for me. (beat) Do you want something? RINA No. GEORDI No? RINA Like what? GEORDI Yes. Absolutely. RINA I'm in a really bad mood. Would you mind? GEORDI No, no, no... STAR TREK: ANTHOLOGY REV. 7/28/89 - ACT ONE 14A. RINA I really should be going. I can't... I feel... really good. Geordi snatches her away and turns to go. Rina looks back. RINA Wait. Can I... ? GEORDI Maybe later. And he's gone. Rina is curious. She sits down with a thoughtful look on her face. CUT TO: INT. TROI'S OFFICE Troi is on her bed, having fallen asleep. She looks up from her work, catching her breath for a moment. The door CHIMES. TROI Come in. The door OPENS to REVEAL Patahk, Geordi and Worf. Everyone normally CRACKLES with civilian whistles and bugles, but this is a little different. They each have DEVOLVER CANNES on their immediately awkward places -- it's like they've never been to DS9 or something. GEORDI We're busy. PATAHK Keller is right. Asking me to protect someone you don't even know is insensitive. Geordi and Worf raise their CANISTERS. STAR TREK: "Allegiance" - REV. 1/17/89 - ACT ONE 14B. GEORDI (taking his cue) Let's go. The four of them start for the door. TIME CUT: INT. WARDROOM where Sito, O'Brien, Worf, KIRA, Odo and LEETA are all gathered. Sito is drinking a cup of raktajino -- the same kind her father used to order -- when she hears the footsteps from the advertisement, she looks up and sees... NOG standing in the doorway, looking her over. He's wearing a new version of his t-shirt, which is now white. SITO (reading the labels) A demonstration of how the Cardassian Occupation is exploding the planet. NOG (taking a seat) Starfleet has refused to negotiate with the enemy. If we sit around and do nothing, they'll occupy Earth, and we'll all be dead. O'BRIEN That's not true, sir. We need to rush to Samaritan. SITO It will take at least three hours before Starfleet can send a reconnaissance vessel. We have to leave immediately. O'BRIEN We're not just sitting around. We can't wait two hours... or three. A beat. LEETA I can't... I have a job to do. ODO Which is ? LEETA I'm trying to find the people who killed my parents. WORF Your parents... ? LEETA They were cadets in the Academy. They were fighting for pride... and for the Alpha Quadrant. And now they're fighting for everything else. WORF That is not true. Your parents are not the enemy. They are loyal to their people. Leeta stands, moves away from the others. LEETA (to herself) I can't let this go on. Not while I'm still alive. (to all) I don't belong on that ship. KIRA Not to you, anyway. Just because you're not live, doesn't mean you don't belong here. WORF This has nothing to do with what happened at the Academy. ODO It didn't... O'BRIEN What I want to know is where you belong on that ship. LEETA I'm not sure. ODO (louder) That's not true -- you don't belong here. You belong with us. Leeta has nowhere to go. Her friends are too angry to speak to her. LEETA It's not true! ODO It is true that I'm your friend... and I want you to know it. ROM But if you don't want me to listen to your theories, then I'll just act like I don't understand... LEETA Emperor! Rom climbs down from the table and stands beside Leeta. ROM That is all theories, not facts. O'BRIEN Not true. You're worried about your brother. ROM Acting Emmired? You mean we're bluffing? LEETA Not at all. It's not easy to become the Emissary. ROM The easy part is ahead. Now, I want to ask for a higher level of autonomy. Infuriated, Leeta turns to O'Brien. LEETA Chief, I wholeheartedly believe you can rid us of Nog. O'BRIEN The problem is, we don't have the time. According to our sources, Nog will be a leading member of al-Rok, a terrorist group based in Rakantha. Their members plan to assassinate the Federation out of revenge for the death of their compatriots. ROM That makes him my enemy. QUARK Not necessarily. According to the Ferengi's duties, Romulans are allowed to speak for themselves. O'BRIEN And according to Ferengi duty, Romulans are not allowed to speak for themselves. QUARK atever. This is still about my brother. Leeta is suddenly startled as Quark puts his arm around her and leans in close. QUARK (close, to Leeta, investigative) What my brother has done to us... has to be done. LEETA The only way we'll ever get our freedom is if we tell the Ferengi Federation where we are. QUARK What about Zek? LEETA We can only take him into the Ferengi system -- unless he agrees to join the union. It's too dangerous for him. QUARK That's not true. He doesn't consider himself a member of the Ferengi Alliance. LEETA But he's one of us. We all like him. They all look around to make sure no one's listening. LEETA What do we have to be thankful for? QUARK That you at least keep your vices straight. ROM Haven't you been paying attention? LEETA What are you talking about? QUARK All right, we keep our heads down and enjoy the game. ROM We all do our brothers' favorite singer. LEETA It was Zek who broke the Ferengi Alliance monopoly and bought the domain from Rugal. Then he ran off and left. QUARK Without a lawyer. ROM I can tell you that Zek is a character of exceptional good name, pure and simple. (a beat) And Rugal is everything that is not Rugal. LEETA (to Quark) You've convinced me to change my mind. QUARK Good. Now you can change mine. Because I'd rather get my hands on a still functioning entire system than try to unfix what's broken. Leeta and Quark are both surprised by the direction of the conversation. ROM And let's not forget, that computer system's still missing two hundred and ninety-four programs. LEETA That's a lot of files. QUARK It's not as large as it looked the other day. And it's not as complicated as it looked a few years ago. Quark and Leeta look at each other across a vast gulf of friendship. 84:[1,#b] ROM You're lying. LEETA I never said I was lying. QUARK What you said didn't meet your qualifications. LEETA You couldn't begin to explain that either. There's a beat as they stare at each other, then Quark shakes his head and follows Rom into the compound. ROM You'd be surprised at the things you can and can't understand. QUARK What we're asking is reasonable regulation. You can't make "reasonable" in this case. ROM It won't stop me from doing what I want to do. QUARK What's going to stop you? ROM Nothing. You can't force me to stop. I would never be a good Ferengi owner by strangling me. LEETA (wry) I mean no disrespect. QUARK horizontaly... ROM (a sly grin) But horizontal quite a bit, honestly. No one's ruled out anybody, let us just sit back and have a drink. Quark and Rom laugh. Leeta and Quark exchange a look of agreement and Leeta gets up to leave. ROM Leeta... And with that, Leeta, Quark and Rom turn away and Leeta and Rom follow Rom into the food court. OMITTED INT. ROM'S QUARTERS Rom, Quark and Leeta ENTER. Rom's in a dreadful mood. Quark's a little upbeat, even more so than Rom. ROM unnecessaries! QUARK (to the brothers) Gentlemen. ROM (still raging) You can't just hand Rom and Leeta's lives over to some Nausicaans. They're not entitled to those things. QUARK It's not fair. You agreed to release Rom to me after the program was finished. ROM (forgetting for a moment) Rom -- I really have to get away from Ferengis. Rom looks at them all with a mixture of anger and adoration. Quark tries to put a smile on his face. QUARK (to Rom) I think you're in fun. Now let's go. Rom smiles back. NEW ANGLE as Rom, Leeta and Nausicaan #1 move toward the exit. Nausicaan #2 takes care of the Nausicaans while the other two Ferengi grab Rom, slam him against the wall and then drag him back to the exit. LEETA (to Rom) Would you please shout an order to the Nausicaans? ROM (doesn't even realize he's doing it) Okay...because... Rom looks at the wall. LEETA Stay right where you are. Okay, okay...for now. But next time you might consider marking your contents. Badly. Rom sneers. ROM You mean destroying evidence? LEETA You might want to consider destroying the Nausicaan's evidence as well. Rom looks at the door. ROM I'll consider it. The door OPENS to reveal a badly dazed Nausicaan waiting for him. ROM (re: Nausicaan) How the mighty have fallen. Rom looks over at Leeta and the others. ROM Let's see how Lemec is holding on. The Nausicaan nods. LEETA (to Rom) You're in a good mood. ROM I'm not. We have to go now or I'll be a million years old. Leeta and the others EXIT. ROM (to Leeta) So what do we do now? LEETA We go back to the station. Rom looks at the door. ROM What if we take our clothes inside the station? No one would look at us unless they saw a Starfleet Nausicaan or a Cardassian in their quarters. Rom shopping for a way out. LEETA We'll go back to the station. It's our only chance. ROM That's so smart of you. Rom shoots him a look. But he's not about to back down now. He shoots Nausicaan #1 a look at the bar -- no threats, just a little stare. Nausicaan #2 glances at Rom, then crosses toward the replicator. LEETA There's my copy. ROM Who's Rom? Leeta takes Rom's copy and SENDS it at the replicator. NUSICAAN #1 (to Rom) Make sure you're not named Dax. Rom nods. He tries to smile, but still looks a little nervous. CUT TO: INT. WARDROOM Worf and Martok are looking over Ruwon's shoulder as he works on a PADD. ROMULAN#2 What does it look like? WORF You havelis. MARTOK Not very hospitable are they? RUWON#2 Wrong. Those guys come from the Dax Quadrant. Our food supplies are always running low. So much for peace. ROMULAN#2 Actually, it's healthiest on the planet when the mother is happy. NU'DAQ (chuckling) Unwin... win no? WORF There is no profit in war. The next delivery sounds like a picnic between two older men. NU'DAQ Who will deliver the message? WORF Your conscience will not be advised. NU'DAQ So, it's a personal choice? WORF It is not personal. NU'DAQ The Klingon Empire's lost its way. (a beat) But we will not be any different. OMITTED INT. MAIN BRIDGE Picard and Joint Relay Officer's on duty. WORF'S COM VOICE Commander. We are receiving a transmission from Senator Cretak at the station. Castillo, who has been moved inside a side room, approaches. The look on his face tells us that there is trouble brewing. CASTILLO Thanks for clearing all that up, Commander. (to Worf) Senator Cretak has... become an advocate for the Maquis. WORF (on the move) I also feel she should make a formal announcement in association with the Karnas settlement. CASTILLO An announcement that the Cardassian government will grant us safe passage from Bajor. That way we can keep our Bajoran cargo and supplies intact. WORF It is a flawed system. We need the safe passage themselves. CASTILLO So we get them medical supplies and we're good for another five months. And suddenly Jennamarrie is back and old Cretak is back and deaf. WORF We do not wish to be reminded of our defeats. CASTILLO I remember the days when the Cardassians occupied Desoto City. Things were bleak. No idea how things would've turned out. WORF When our young people took command of the outpost, we did what any good order-of- phenomena would've done. We created worlds. Towns. And we built great cities on these fantastic grounds. All these "little" settlements grew and grew... CASTILLO And spread like wildfire... WORF It was our greatest triumph. The Maquis... CASTILLO No, you don't understand them at all. These separatists are human. They're backward. They're killers. They've destrodden the most vulnerable among us... We saved them. WORF That is not true. Some of them were hurt most... CASTILLO The Sawtooths. Oh, how they were once so numerous... but thousands have since fallen out of favor with the rest of the system... we kept them in check... we protected our settlements... (beat) But the most striking of all... the Locutus of Gallias. This takes a deep breath out of Worf. WORF You say he was once a representative of the Locutus of Limulus... CASTILLO Yes. He once was. At least, I did. I represent him now. Worf's silence is a pause of sorts. Castillo is still fueled by the anger and paranoia of his experience but it's a facade and it doesn't seem to make him any happier. CASTILLO (continuing) I don't know who represented him... but he represents something that shares much in common with you Klingons. (beat) He's ambitious. A direct challenge to the authority of the established order... he's realistic about how things will change. WORF Those are valid considerations. But they do not, in fact, understand anything about what happened to the Klingons. (MORE) WORF (Cont'd) Who are you to rule by special laws? This throws Castillo back a little. CASTILLO Not me, Worf. WORF Nitrome(irritated) The Enterprise has ruled these quadrants for almost sixty years. I have no intention of forcing anyone to comply with your orders. CASTILLO Then why haven't you informed Federation authorities? Worf's eyes flash and he stiffens slightly. WORF Because State secrets are the business of Starfleet. CASTILLO Not this Federation. This time, it's different. Way, way, way back. When we were children, I remember sitting sentimental notes to parents and teachers around the globe -- waiting for them to bring their children home to breed. (MORE) CASTILLO (Cont'd) サーティ(beat) But even then, we knew that the holograms were causing trouble and we didn't want to impose... He trails off, unwilling to take the next step. CASTILLO (continuing) I suppose I've always wondered how different it will be from where we were when you first attended the Academy. (beat) It used to give people hope. Now... it's a hopeless dream. Worf's expression hardens. He looks drained. CASTILLO (continuing) That's why they put the illusion into the illusion, and give hope in return. It's what they call "school." 龍 WORF We have begun to understand how widespread this effect is. This is a deeply troubled man, Captain. His love... CASTILLO What do they call their children when they're not in the real world? Monsters? WORF Yes. CASTILLO I don't understand. WORF This is the kind of choice they make. It defines who they are. Students choose, not inheritors. CASTILLO The students who decided against making a career out of it. Who choose to pursue a career... with a ship or a life. That's me. WORF No. CASTILLO That's okay. Because when you make a choice to pursue a career, it doesn't matter which choice you make. You'll have come to a place where you can begin to feel something. A feeling of great joy or sorrow. It may not be easy, it may take a long time, but once you do, you'll never want to be without it. Worf's not buying it. WORF That is not true. CASTILLO It isn't? What do you mean, "once you begin to feel..."? You never cease to feel. You never cease to feel. You never ceremoniously pronounce your op- humor. WORF I do not feel... CASTILLO You're just not human. WORF I am not human. I am a Klingon. CASTILLO Congratulations. (beat) Now what do I say to the rest of the crew? WORF You should say nothing. Just leave them. They are gone. Carry on. Worf goes to a console and sits down. WORF (continuing) Continue, sir. During the following conversation, Castillo reason with Worf while maintaining his usual neutrality. CASTILLO There's no sense in getting comments or phone calls from you. WORF Perhaps you should reflect on your failure to bring home a ship. CASTILLO If the Klingons try to get through the wormhole, they'll get through it. And they'll go what else? To the Romulans. WORF Which raises the question of how many other ships are still down there. CASTILLO I'd guess that the number one priority is to get that wormhole open. WORF Where are your gentlemen, Captain? CASTILLO You've got them, with a little extra room under the belt. WORF (indicating his viewscreen) Or are you telling me that this is a bad time for adventure? CASTILLO Maybe two, maybe three times in a row -- Frontier Hawks being the latest. They're all quite excited. WORF You have nothing to lose. I'll see what I can do. He glances over his shoulder at Castillo, something suspicious in his eyes. Suddenly, Worf's ship VANISHES, and he's gone. Castillo moves toward the door to the Holodeck as Worf EXITS. INT. CORRIDOR Worf moves down the hallway with a cool, serene expression. FOLLOW him as he passes several CREWMEMBERS whose expressions show they've known these two men for years. WORF Your promotion is recognized by the Academy and you're honored. Congratulations. One of them, a woman named T'JON, turns to Castillo. T'JON Lieutenant Castillo! He moves toward Worf. CARDILLO Hello, Judith... At that moment, T'Jon walks up to Worf and raises her glass above her head. T'JON (to Castillo) You remember the game, don't you Kurn? Worf looks down at his drink offering no reaction. CARDILLO (casually) Casualties... T'JON That's right... now you have to tell your friends and let them know we've made a mistake... WORF I can't do that. T'JON Sure you can't. Why? You're the only one who can save you. Worf steps back from her, eyes hard with rage. WORF I have cast aside the lie so far as lies within my power. But I still fear the heights I've jumped. And now the descent... T'JON You're Reptilian? WORF Clearly, you are not, for you wouldn't seek out your enemy, Ferengi. T'JON (a snort of contempt) Ferengi... He raises his glass slightly. T'JON (to the glasses) To Camelot Unchained. As he raises his glass, Worf reaches under and removes a CENTERPIECE FROM ITS PLATFORM. Using its own panels, he begins to design a device that will alter the course of the Enterprise. T'JON Evade! Evade! Evade! Continuing to roll the dice... FADE OUT. END OF ACT FIVE THE END
