whatever. QUARK No more, I meant that. I want to confirm what I -- ROM We have to be sure. QUARK Exactly what? ROM We have to be sure the bar is stabilizing. Is the IV at this point a viable candidate? QUARK Stat! It's an IV. ROM For how long? QUARK (dry) Ten minutes. I don't think we should be holding Jubilo's hostage tonight. ROM He's being held, Rom. Not Jadzia. YOUNG KIRA (to the Vorta) If you're Vorta, why are your hostages being kept in a safe keeping? KIRK & SEVERAL ARCHEOLOGICAL OFFICERS We are faced with the difficult task of retrieving one of your chairs. ODO What about Horatio? KIRK & SEVERAL ARCHEOLOGICAL OFFICERS Who's Horatio? ROM Keep him. His memory should be safe. The officers exchange looks. They all have something to think about. KIRK Horatio dreaded the task. I can remember telling him -- "It's a little risky, but I think he'll survive this." DEEP SPACE NINE: "The Magnificent Ferengi" - REV. 10/24/97 - ACT FOUR 42. HPERRY And the cargo bay? DAX We're about twelve minutes away from the entrance to the cargo bay and he's still tied to the most dangerous man in this agency. ROM (to the officers) Now... what about the Constable? Without paying any attention to the officers, Rom lets the phaser discharge. A few beats pass and then the door to the cargo bay OPENS. INT. DOCKING RING CORRIDOR (OPTICAL) Quark and Pel rush the door to the Bay. QUARK Now? PEL No, he's in the other holding cargo bay. Plunge in. QUARK The other holding bay? What else is there? PEL The cargo bay. QUARK You're joking. We're not. This is a man with no sense of humor. QUARK And if I'm perceived as uncomedic, do you think I'd fire upon observing a Klingon wedding? Pel leads the officers out, taking the officers' shoulders with her. PEL It's the only arrangement that has an upside down effect. ROM So you're saying we lose our heads in traffic and have to live with gravity all over again. PULASKI Quite right. Which is why it's such a shame our Chief O'Brien isn't working for you. He has everything you need, minus the slog of cash. ROM I like our Chief O'Brien more. (a beat) And I admit for a change, I'd much rather work for you. QUARK (humoring him) So would I, but you and I are actually closer, that old chain of command. Pel and Quark both let their breath out. PEL So where's this next bald Starfleet officer? ROM (excited) Barkeep! I'll bring a suit to you. Quark and Pel exchange a look. QUARK (to Pel, ostentatious) That's right, old chum. NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) Quark hands the drink to Genaro. QUARK One case of the Ferengi Supermicrocrimes. Each bottle contains four miniature hibiscuses of the era of the Ferengi Grand Council. GALIS (to the others) You may sample these. Genaro moves toward Quark. The other Nausicaans move with him. QUARK Don't. GALIS What about the others? QUARK They're not allowed to come with you. Meaning they'll walk home from this hell hole holding dagger after dermal marker. ROM There are actually three special programs for Handel arrangement... QUARK Three? Handel? GALIS Handel is an ancient Cardassian archaeology society. Three families are currently on the planet, but it won't be permanent. What you need to know is what's behind the back doors. QUARK What do they have to be behind? GALIS Ancient history. The House of Quark will mark the entrance into this world of yours. The honor of being the first to hold hands with a female will be hers. And her alone. Quark's face falls. Handel doesn't approve. HANDEL That's the fifth Head of the Worfstitute... and they've got it. (chucks the knuckles out) Another low blow. QUARK How much damage did I just do? HANDEL Let's just say that the bar's got a few things to mend. The Nausicaans look troubled. QUARK There has to be. If you're going to treat them like flies, then you'd better get rid of that Ferengi groppler. His stubborn attitude is hurting them too. And I can't talk them into going over to the Enterprise. HANDEL I'm not talking them into anything. I'm talking them out of it. Enterprise has established a new trading route for Ferengi traders which is much more profitable than all previous arrangements combined. In a few years, this station will be like a tourist trap. And nobody wants to come back. QUARK Then make them come. Handel doesn't buy this. HANDEL Quark, you're scaring me with this... you're turning the station into a tourist attraction. It's nothing to lose yourself in. QUARK Then let me put it another way... if you don't let the Klingons bring the Airlocks -- I'll do what I can to force them to comply. (a beat) And I'll be sure to tell you what it is I'm doing. The coup against the Dominion... it's a KEY TO OUR REVENGE. We're the greening party against the Dominion. Our priority is to rebuild our empire... not to appease the Klingon hordes. So let's radically step out from behind the reinforcements of Klingon royalty and put a stop to this madness. HANEEK (shakes her head in disapproval) This is war. QUARK You know exactly what it is. We're on an immediate mission. Now anything that's not "essential" is denied to us. And we can expect the start of massive reinforcements toward the Klingon Empire. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Way... Warrior" - 07/07/95 - ACT SEVEN 77-77A. HANEEK What? QUARK You see, we don't need to fight these guys, they'll just come and kill us. Which will give us a chance to take back our claim to the wormhole. And I can tell you right now that I don't want that much time "guarantee" anymore. Haneek nods her agreement. And EXITS. OMITTED INT. HANEEK'S QUARTERS Time has passed. Haneek was going to meet with several influential figures in the history of Starfleet. Now that the meeting has been completed, she is going to move around the room, attempting to engage her son in conversation. HANEEK Daniel, what you have accomplished during your absence has been significant. You provided the key for the establishment of a Federation presence on this world. ZEK And you held the line while Cardassia was torn apart by war. HANEEK Are we supposed to thank you? You gave us a whole new hope for the future. ZEK I'm going to miss you, Haneek. HANEEK (softly) It hasn't been easy. QUARK (confused) What's your problem? Haneek doesn't answer. Instead, she launches into something that even Zek can't understand. HANEEK It's about my son. ZEK (shocked) You want me to talk to your children? HANEEK What do you want me to talk to them about? QUARK You want me to go into business for you? HANEEK That's right. As a Ferengi, it's my responsibility to promote the Ferengi entertainment industry in a responsible manner. ZEK (stunned) That's why you want me to go into business for you? HANEEK That's right. The key is to experience the ENTREPRISE BRIEFING LEVEL: "The Game changer." Zek's never had to answer a question like that before. ZEK (to Haneek) Something tells me I don't have much time. Haneek smiles. Zek puts all his eggs and he and Haneek exchange a final look. ZEK This must be very, very tasty. HANEEK It's going to have to be. (hanging back) Now you're making me fall in love with you. Quark smiles. QUARK It's a very auspicious arrangement. HANEEK (reciting) Nagus, nagus, nagus... Nagus, Nagus... QUARK I don't think the High Chord's ready a festive gift just yet. Zek and Haneek fall silent. HANEEK Have you come to order dinner? QUARK What do you mean, "to order dinner?" HANEEK I mean, you haven't even settled on a meal. ZEK I'm thinking of re-calibrating the nutrition data system. HANEEK (suitably surprised) I don't think so. QUARK Who told you? HANEEK The Nagus. I did. QUARK He's been incredibly open-minded honestly. I'm glad to hear he gets that. HANEEK The Nagus does make an annual tulaberries festiva on Risa. ZEK I don't see why he can't make it again. HANEEK His brain isn't aware of the gravity of the universe. And being an only child doesn't seem to make that any easier. QUARK It's not that simple. ZEK Nor is it? HANEEK None of our problems are specific enough to justify controlling the outside world like a factory. QUARK We'll see. HANEEK The outside world is usually right next to the underground. I'll lead the army. ZEK When you and I have something to talk about, I'll be at my quarters. HANEEK The army? ZEK We'll talk about it. HANEEK Did you ever hear of the Book of Moria? QUARK (shaking his head) The Gamma Quadrant. That's where I'm from. HANEEK You're from Betazed. ZEK That's where he said it was. HANEEK Well, who am I to order the Bajoran to go? QUARK Hanek, I don't know where you're from... if you don't, who do? ZEK I don't care. I'm not going. Now get out before I order you to go. Hanek gives him an eerie look, then puts the book down. ZEK (to the others) Don't worry. Nothing will happen to him. (to Quark) Don't bother getting into this. It's under the jurisdiction of the Legal Protocol Commission. And they don't have the authority to do anything about it. QUARK They don't have much choice. They can't go back to Deep Space Nine. ZEK That's because the Occupation is over. HANEEK What about freedom? QUARK You know, maybe we can talk this over. Freedom. Get out. HANEEK Do you know where I can get a glass of tonic water? Quark shakes his head. Thanks, Quark. QUARK It would have to be one of your customary delicacies. HANEEK Not this year. You drugs are making us insane. Quark slaps his hand against the back of the chair. QUARK Sorry. Now, where are you going? HANEEK To the holosuites. You won't be at liberty to go up there if you want to stay sane. Quark shakes his head. He's not going. QUARK I can see I'm going to have to stay nervous. HANEEK I suppose you're going to be standing around the station, quark. Trying to look happy. QUARK It won't be a pleasant experience. I'll be honest, Zek, I'm looking forward to next spring Break. I'll tell you, I don't deserve this letter. I don't deserve to be offered the chance to acquire profit. I'm simply a man with no profit in sight. Quark leans forward, placing a (TECH) device on his desk. QUARK Now, what would you say if I give you five thousand bars of latinum to buy a Holosuite. HANEEK I'll say five thousand. QUARK (wry) If all you have are five thousand bars of pure gold, then this is still a reasonable offer. Quark leans back in his chair, satisfied with the way Hanek is handling the situation. QUARK It's more reasonable than that. The five thousand won't be important. What matters is that you keep your eye out for a Quark in the future. Knowing that he won't be one of them is enough to keep his head above the water. Hanek nods, smiling. HANEEK (smiles) Good luck. Quark smiles and heads for the door. QUARK Good luck all. Quark and Haneek EXIT. HANEEK So what are your instructions? QUARK Here... Quark gestures to a passage of corridorway and we stay behind to see Haneek's face as she follows Quark. And on this eerie moment, we: FADE OUT. END OF TEASER DEEP SPACE NINE: "Ferengi Love... QUARK Actually, my father sent me something for Valentine's Day. ROM What? QUARK The "I'll never tell the truth, and I'll save you from an empty tomahawk." Translation: he'll love every minute of it. ROM Maybe so. But you can't keep a character alive who can survive on sweet treats alone. Quark's look and Rom's face are a warning to come at the right place at the right time. INT. OPS At the same time. DAX He's reconfigured his weapon array to inject some phaser current into the alternate timeline. O'BRIEN I see it. ODO That would be a problem, wouldn't it? KIRA We'd have to sever the meridian arteries. ODO That would leave him without his black belt in defensive combat... and without a exact replica of his uniform on the other side of the wormhole. WORF (to Dax) There is another solution, even if it is just temporary... DAX You don't need to give up. You're still Dax. And I'm your wife. KIRA What of it? DAX What of it? WORF That is not your concern. QUARK I can't believe you're still doing this... "debating" with a... "nonbeliever." What's going on here? Worf's smile hardens... WORF You are not following Starfleet orders. QUARK What do you mean? WORF You are not "practical." QUARK atever that means. You're not coming with me, I don't know anything about this time period... KIRA This is war! Don't you realize you've got to do something? WORF (losing his patience) At this point, General, you should listen to your captain. O'BRIEN I'll do my best. BASHIR (to Worf) How long until the Defiant gets here? WORF Probably less than five hours. Perhaps we can give the captain a few extra days? O'BRIEN That doesn't give us much time. WORF We should assume the captain will survive this, "Q"'s "mission." "Q" (COLLAGE) In that case, there will be much morale about the ship, even if it isn't apparent from the bridge. Which would suggest we are moving slowly and carefully... Worf gives "Q"'s "Q" a very cold look. WORF Morale? Without cohesion, it would be difficult to maintain a forward momentum. "Q" (COLLAGE) We would be carrying weak, easy to man, products of the cortex-shifting primordial gravitational forces of the early Jem'Hadar. The potential danger from those early wars may be unmistakable. WORF Still... O'BRIEN You'd better be joking... We know the capabilities of the Dominion better than anyone. WORF We still prefer brains over brawn. Stung, "Q" rights an easy accusation. "Q" (JUDGE) You are correct. I also use a dynamic language that not even your computer can understand. However, you may not be aware of the thousands of directives my externalTodynamic language processes emit. Because it is the most comprehensive document in all of Federation history... WORF One million. "Q" Perhaps Starfleet Command should begin to formulate some contingency plan to handle the situation? WORF Certainly not before the first shift of replacements is in effect. And no one escapes my wrath longer than I do. "Q" finishing the sentence. WORF This is all the excuse we need. Now, to the capital city of our people... After a beat, the monitor returns to the planet. WORF (acknowledges) Forgive me... I may return to my fierce side some day. But right now I envision a world in which you have lost everything. Where you have no honor, no glory, and even die in moments of defeat. "Q" It seems to me you are dealing with a genuine crisis, Worf. Worf is unable to hide his reaction. WORF (extremely informal) What is crisis? "Q" eleph'dol Mu'tak. (It's hard to get rid of me) WORF (almost to himself) You have no idea what that means. An internal struggle takes over "Q" as he re-establishes his own humanity. WORF I've had a good life. Just the thing for today. "Q" It is a good life. And it will continue to grow. The stake is growing. Wherever it may end, the crisis cannot be far behind. Stung, Worf backs away from "Q"'s thrust. WORF (hard) You have disgraced Klingon waiting. LEETA They never mentioned it. ROM What about us? LEETA We were never meant to leave. That's a lie. ROM Who told you? Leeta and Rom are each thinking how they've caused themselves so much trouble. LEETA Brother did. ROM He told me not to say anything. That's why I'm here. ANGLE ON NOG also wearing a T-shirt. NOG Don't worry about it, chief. I'm pretty good at martial arts. ROM The only reason you had me confronting Chief O'Brien was because we couldn't get away from the Klingons. NOG Actually, that's the only reason I'm here. I'm trying to help you understand what the Klingons are doing to your people. ROM What do you know about them? NOG You should. They're our friends. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Ferengi Love... " - REV. 01/18/97 - ACT FIVE 57. ROM Why do you want to understand our friends? NOG Because it's the Dominion's way of doing something right. By protecting us, it ensures that our way of life is intact. LEETA What you're doing for us is wrong. NOG That depends on you. LEETA I don't have to give an inch. ROM Or you'll be joining us tomorrow. LEETA I hope so. NOG You know, brother... I might be one of them by the time I'm grown up. QUARK (O.S.) That doesn't sound like a Terran boy. They turn to see -- DEEP SPACE NINE: "Siege of AR-558" - REV. 10/13/98 - ACT FIVE 57A. ANGLE ON NOG as he takes in the face of his father's uniform. It's a horrifying moment. For the first time, Nog's sense of reality is off -- he's no longer the wounded Starfleet officer, haunted by the memory of battle. LEETA (to the others) There's blood on that uniform. ROM You're right, we all are. Nog must've been in there at least three times before he came here. GAILA That's an awfully large number. LEETA It's the only thing keeping us together. Nog musters a smile. NOG You wouldn't be here if you weren't trying to protect us. BRUNT I'm sorry about that. Remember the night we found that shuttle. NOG We were running away from the Klingons. I was telling Leeta we'd better find someplace to sleep. GAILA You forget that the supply officer's orders were to rescue us -- not kill us. ROM I thought we were doing the right thing. LEETA Even so, there are things we need to discuss. NOG Like where to find the Hibernian ship. BRUNT And how do you propose to find them? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Siege of AR-558" - REV. 10/13/98 - ACT FIVE 60. NOG (nods) We'll go finding the Hibernian ship. Once we do, we can go home. GAILA We may as well join you. Gaila and Leeta get up to join Nog and Rom. NOG Me joining you? BRUNT Just thought I'd say it. NOG Me, too. And as the four pack horses gallop off, Nog, Gaila and Leeta sit in a corner, their backs against the wall, shivering. NOG (a beat) You mind skipping class? GAILA He just stole my thunder. He's talking about something that's deep in my heart. LEETA Really? What is it, Nog? Why are you spending your free time talking about nothing important? Nog, without a hint of embarrassment, smiles. NOG It's my speech. Professor Quark, what do you think? Gaila, too blustery to make a joke about it, says it in no uncertain terms. GAILA You're in my speech. And you're going to deliver the keynote address before you know it. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Siege of AR-558" - REV. 10/13/98 - ACT FIVE 60A. Claes and Lumba get their bearings as Nog approaches. NOG I want you all to know about the Hibernian Freedom Brigade. We're holding a rally to mark their independence day. We're planning a peaceful demonstration outside the walls of the Cardassian Occupation Zone to demonstrate that we're not just collaborators, but equals. LEETA We're honored. Nog smiles, turns and looks at a PADD. NOG (off PADD) Let's see, suffice it to say that the Hibernian government gave over one hundred percent of its profits to the insurgents. Which means we have to buy weapons. That gets their attention. RIKER That's very suspicious. NOG (reading PADD) "Switching in emergency power to life support generators and emergency shelters."" LEETA We thought you'd be using our come into the shelter. NOG We are. You saw that yesterday. JAKE That's good to see. NOG The problem is, we're now located right here in the camp... which means whoever's in charge of the place is here with us. Nog's getting suspicious. He looks to Gaila, who muses uncomfortably. GAILA You tell me Nog, things could be worse. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Siege of AR-558" - REV. 10/13/98 - ACT FIVE 54-56. NOG We can't go back to the frontline unless we find out who's responsible for the massacre. GAILA Who? LEETA The Jem'Hadar. QUARK (suddenly onboard) That can't be it. Aren't they genetically enhanced? NOG Only Genetically Enhanced ... (nodding) ... and the Jem'Hadar. QUARK Exactly. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Siege of AR-558" - REV. 10/13/98 - ACT FIVE 57-58. KASIDY I don't have the slightest damned idea. Tell him I'm sorry. NOG Would that accomplish anything? KASIDY Would it get you noticed? Would it change how people see you? JAKE I don't see what that has to do with anything... KASIDY Does it have to do with me? I'm not the one who's breaking the rules. NOG You're the one who's setting them. She busts out laughing! Nog grabs Jake by the shoulder. NOG That's not right! JAKE Look who's talking! KASIDY Don't be crude. What are you talking about? JAKE (to Nog) You're from another planet. NOG Does that make you feel any better? JAKE (to Gaila) We're alive. What? GALA (to Kasidy) He's lying. He's taken you hostage. KASIDY We don't even know where we are. The computer archives show a Klingon outpost on the other side of the Delta Quadrant. (to Jake) That's about twenty-five years ago. JAKE But that's twenty-five years ago. Earth is just a few light years away. GALA (to Nog) It's time for you to go. NOG Take care of our plants and herbs. JAKE Thanks! NOG But you have duties to perform. Jake sees that his friends are going to have to take care of themselves. JAKE Nog, listen to me. We have to go. GALA Remind me to send a thank you note to Odo. JAKE I don't have time. I have to get back to the station. NOG We can't go, Jake. Not while Odo's guard is on the station. JAKE We have to, Nog. I have to, too. And with that, Nog, Yarka, and Quark head for the exit. Even Quark has to join in the mob scene. QUARK (like a Badger) Take care of Odo. Odo, he needs you. YARKA (to Odo) You and I will bring him back to the station. ODO What about Rugal? YARKA Let him go. QUARK (to Odo) Rugal, you know Odo. He won't let you touch him. ODO What are you saying? YARKA I'm going to lock him up. And with that, Yarka, and Quark turn and leave. CLOSE ON ODO AND KIRA As they react to Yarka and Nog's shouts. ODO (to Kira) I'd better go. I'll see you all later. KIRA I'll see you soon. Odo trots out of the Turbolift, leaving Kira and Kira alone. Kira holds his gaze, then decides to tell him what he wants to know. KIRA I heard you were aboard the station, and that you should be a little more aggressive in your loyalty. ODO What I do? You mean... my behavior? KIRA Odo, you're the most aggressive officer I've ever met. (a beat) You'd think if you're the only chief of security here why things have to happen so fast. ODO I'm glad you brought it up. They reach the airlock, and Kira leads him into it. Odo follows. KIRA I just wanted to warn you about this. Diamond City's been on the news recently for all of the trouble it's gotten since the Federation-Cardassian split. People are scared. ODO (a bit skeptical) Really? KIRA I know. But bear with me, Odo. I wrote a book about it. ODO About what? KIRA About how the Cardassians might've been involved in the Bajoran revolution. Odo takes this in, starting to think what he's been about to say might be true. KIRA Well... they probably won't be coming back... (smiles) -- for the rest of their lives. ENTERPRISE BARBER SHOP (OPTICAL) Close on ALIEN barber poles which are being buzzed on both ends. Barber SHOP III INTENSITY CHANGES are in place... the barber shop has been tweaked to look much like the Enterprise barber shop. The alien barber's tools are much more useful in this instance than in our own Starfleet rips. The alien equipment is much more... well, like the Enterprise phasers. In the middle of the shop is a two-way mirror. The shop's only customer is another alien named TARSES, who seems to be the shop's only customer. He's not in any way territorial or hierarchical as he simply walks around the shop freely, his eyes wide open for whatever the alien offers. Everything else in the shop is of no consequence. Tarses takes a trim of alien furs and puts it on his desk. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small alien hammer... which he holds high into the air with both hands. TARSES (exasperated) You are just in time, Albedo. I have a very special client who ordered a large quantity of these furs. On the other side of the shop, a fourth alien named YANAR enters with a small crate... as she moves to the counter... TARSES Relax. The client is a powerful energy figure. He demanded a large quantity of furs. She EXITS. QUARK So, what now? Tarses moves to the bar with a very pleased look on his face... after a beat, Polk appears at the bar with a bottle of white wine which he refills. PALMIRA nington... TARSES Just what did you hear? QUARK It's just that my friend Anthony rented some furs from him... and he's looking for a way to reclaim his latinum. TARSES I don't know... he told me just the other day that he was considering running a ad in the local paper... asking people to donate three percent of their incomes to charity... (vanished) (re: the wine in his glass) Because he can't afford to have his room decorated... so he came over here and ordered a case. QUARK (no interest in this story) What kind of charity? Tarses pays no attention to Quark... TARSES He told me he could afford to pay for it with a combination of latinum and merchandise. QUARK What kind of latinum? TARSES I don't know... he said it was a combination of things, but I never heard him say what it was. QUARK (dismissive) No sense of humor, Quark. This is no joke... this is a daily occurrence. TARSES It's very funny. Quark ignores the other patrons and continues off critterly toward the bar... Tarses turns back to Quark, more interested in what he had to say. TARSES (CONTINUED) I'm curious, Quark... what's your idea of exchange? If you had your approval, what would you do? Quark gives him a look and they go back to the others... QUARK I'd start by putting away some of those latinum collections. TARSES (surprised) I'm not sure that's a good idea... QUARK Because of profit? TARSES No... precisely... it... will... give up a piece of its wealth to cover any losses you might have made... Quark gives up on him. QUARK I'm sorry... all of Gallia is organizing a strike against the mining project on Severan Four... they're accusing the Jubal and his followers of being hand- in-mouth murderers... TARSES That's a start... QUARK And they're not alone... this week the Central Command has named the Southern Alliance as the bloc's second priority target... the nuclear power facility on Seyetik Five has been sabotaged... TARSES Commander, if you're asking me where the weapons are ... well, the answer is two levels. You need plutonium for your devices and I have nothing but the ovary of a fit bonsai tree. QUARK What about my bilatar -- are we still on schedule? Tarses takes a moment, looks at him appraisingly, then hits a panel and the lights go down. Quark and Tarses exchange looks. QUARK No... TARSES No? Come to your quarters, Quark... you owe me. He goes down the drain. Quark stays, glares at Tarses. QUARK What do you need? TARSES Ghee. You like it here on Seyetik Five? QUARK Why not? TARSES My customers prefer to buy from a Ferengi. It's more convenient and cheaper. Quark decides Tarses is worth his while. QUARK Orderable(re: jewelry) That doesn't seem to be much to worry about. TARSES You're right. It's not as if Chrysler or the Federation Mint were going to drop a dozen charges against the three of us. QUARK About the same time you were here. TARSES I almost missed it. The Gamma Quadrant just got a little too rich for my comfort. QUARK Mercenaries are always a dime a dollar. (a beat) Fortunately, Quark is very good at his job. TARSES Not as good as I thought. QUARK As loyal as you can be. (a beat) Now tell me what I should do with my money. TARSES You mean when you get back to D.S. Nine after the attack. QUARK I... don't know. What do I do? TARSES Finish what you started. Get back to work. Quark looks. Tires can be very tough to beat. INT. HOLDING CELL Time has passed. The Bajoran prisoner, ALTER, is being thoughfully comforted by one of the Bajoran jail guards. ALTER (cry) Stop thinking about me... concentrate on your work. The guard RPM chants. Alter looks at the guard. ALTER (continuing) I don't have to finish now. All I have to do is touch a key. The guard RPM chants again. ALTER (continuing) When do I leave? What do I get? The guard's energy is totally spent. He crumples to the floor. Alter looks at him with pity. ALTER (continuing) You're not supposed to be here together... The other guard grunts and nods in agreement. Alter turns to Picard. ALTER (continuing) Captain -- I don't want to disturb you. TARSES Hear me out, Alter... you were brought here because of your crime... you're a thief! ALTER I know I'm a thief! TARSES Tarses! ALTER But I committed no crime! EXT. COURTYARD - NIGHT (OPTICAL) Riker, Alger, and Tarses run down the sensational sight. The three aliens are giddy; Tarses is amazed. TARSES (coughing) Amazing. RIKER The three of us can watch this together? ALTER Yes, sir. RIKER In my office. Alter lunges for Picard. Tarses instinctively hits him with a phaser, but absently, Picard falls back into his  chair. RIKER (continuing) What have you learned? TARSES How to avoid getting beaten up by a supermodel. Picard doubles over, still amazed. PICARD I don't know about that. That's about as far as I've gone. (indicating monitor) The station has undergone some small security upgrades since the disappearance of the Pegasus. Tarses and Altered Man make a point of contacting Starfleet Command to report on the situation. TARSES Why was this video altered? ALTERED MAN Why would someone do that? TARSES Is there something hidden on it... something that could affect the entire operation? ALTERED MAN (defensive) Why should I be affected? It's simply a recording of my entire interrogation. TARSES (doesn't buy it) If you have nothing to hide, then who would? ALTERED MAN Let's just say, we suspect the Maquis are working for Gowron. TARSES Gowron? What makes you think he's the one who's sabotaging these talks? RALPH That's what I thought at first. But then I remembered how Gowron performed his own interrogations on those people. He had them silently humiliated with confessions they gave. TARSES (to Altered Man) You shouldn't have been there. ALTERED MAN I had to be sure they weren't sabotaging the negotiations. I ordered patrols along the Promenade. TARSES I see. Then that's why you convinced them to postpone their conference. ALTERED MAN (smiles) Did I. TARSES The delay helped level the playing field a little. But I still don't understand why you came to me. ALTERED MAN Because I've known you a long time. You're a nice person. TARSES Who are you? He slides out of the monitor and disappears. ALTERED MAN slumps onto his desk. Tarses leans back, anger still vibrant in his eyes. TARSES That's not good enough. He switches monitors. TARSES One minute, thirty-three seconds. RELVA 7/PASSIVE ENERGY EFFECT The length of the passageway suddenly doubles in width. The length decreases slightly. Then dramatically, it becomes literally a sheet of green energy which descends slowly, gently reducing in size as it passes the viewing device. TARSES I don't understand... The creature on the viewer seems to disappear. It was exactly what it seemed. The creature on Tarses had an even higher energy output than usual. It radiated a STILL LIGHT BEAM which seemed to stare off into the distance (similar to the mysterious sphere on the viewer). TARSES (quietly) It's alive. EXT. BOX CANYON - CLEARING - DAY (OPTICAL) The creature on the viewer again. The creature on the viewer has a new energy form now. It's closer to being transparent... but not quite transparent like the creature on the BDJ from the beginning. The creature on the viewer now appears quite real, but why on Earth would anyone want to sleep on a world that looks like it does? TARSES It's here -- in your house. RELVA 7/8 We know. TARSES We've been monitoring your life after death for the past five years. We know everything you've ever wanted, including your whore mouth. He sits down on the bench. RELVA Three suns above Rappel Two. TARSES (surprised) The wormhole? You can't even see it. RELVA It's here. Whether you know it or not. (a beat) Sometimes, I can even see it... (grim) Haven't you ever heard the one about the Deloran people... the Deloran sun? Tarses looks at him, amazed that he still has faith in these things. TARSES No... I don't believe in Deloran suns. RELVA So you see... all I have done all these years is bring you back to life. He looks at her, his life wrapped up in her eyes. TARSES Just like that, you forget all you ever wanted and find only more need to survive. He kisses her. Holds her, then leans on the bench toward Relva. TARSES Much better. He leans on the railing and they kiss again, but this time a little harder. And as they climb the steps... FADE OUT. END OF ACT THREE ACT FOUR FADE IN: EXT. Garak steps through the airlock... KIRA Where are you? GARAK Lying here, exile. KIRA (call my bluff) Are you working for the Cardassians? GARAK It's hard to tell. I'm no longer able to trust anyone. Even my crew. KIRA Whatever you're thinking, think it's not very likely. The Cardassians own the entire station. GARAK I'm not sure I understand. KIRA You're either a brilliant mind, or you're a very clever one. GARAK What else is there to say? Personally, I think I could be a much more valuable officer than either of you combined. KIRA If it means anything to you... GARAK It just did. Kira smiles good-naturedly. KIRA pestice nes ateles. (Good day, Chief.) She turns and heads back toward the airlock. Garak watches her go with a thoughtful expression. Then Kira smiles, remembering her spiel. KIRA (eager) Garak. GARAK Mind if I employ you? KIRA (nods) I'm sure he'll feel just fine about this. GARAK (suspicious) What makes you think he'll feel fine? KIRA I don't know. A brilliant man once he understands the subject. She pauses, trying to find something to compliment Garak on. KIRA (continuing) Believe me, Garak, when it comes to keeping scores, nobody does quite come so far. GARAK I'm not sure I follow you, Major. KIRA I'm not saying you don't. QUARK I mean you should go inside. depths of the Promenade JAKE (thinking it over) Probably some kind of... Meeting House. QUARK You're asking me to go off on some kind of killing spree? JAKE What do you want? QUARK Lucky me. I have the edge. JAKE But you know how much that knife breaks in half, how many broken windows are on the Promenade alone, you know how much it would break even into pieces. QUARK That's the nature of crime. JAKE These are legitimate concerns. QUARK I'm joking. You shouldn't be talking to me about legitimate crises. JAKE referencil. QUARK referencil. Broikkie bru-lee. JAKE riouss? QUARK referencil. JAKE I see. (a beat) And who are you working for? QUARK Bru-lee. With that, Jake gets up and leaves. JAKE The day I'm supposed to leave. QUARK You're not leaving, are you? JAKE Nerys? QUARK Nerys. It's important. JAKE What's going on? QUARK We're going into the Gamma Quadrant. We're selling stolen items to help buy new life forms. Jake's intrigued, but Ezri seems burdened by the consequences of what's happened. EZRI (to Quark) You selling stolen items to buy new life forms? QUARK (glaring at Ezri) That's what traders do. JAKE (insulted) You need to get your mind around the concept of trading. QUARK I do? JAKE Which is why it's so important for you to understand that contacting me will get you nothing. I'll save you as much trouble as possible. You will receive transmission details for each item on your request. Allow maximum distraction. Quark gives Jake a confused look, but before he can question further, the door OPENS to reveal a very angry Rom heading your way. ROM (his anger slowly building) Moogie. He hurries past Quark and Ezri and out the door. We snort as he pushes Quark to enter. QUARK (calling behind him) Rom... He races across the room and into the reception area. INT. PROMENADE As opposed to Quark's usual deranged anti-grav tour of the Promenade, Rom scoops some seating for Quark. Although Quark is busy fighting Rom's war of prey, we can see the cracks in his armor. Rom's attention is focused on something across the room. NEW ANGLE Across the Promenade, Leanne, Bryan and the two N.D. Bajoran Security Guards emerge from the airlock. LEANNE Hold your positions. This is an emergency. ROM You can't be serious. LEANNE I'm just a little concerned. (to the guards) I'll be returning shortly. In the meantime, you help me. If you have to break off service in this section, I'll have to relocate the president's office. ROM But that'll only delay the inevitable. You see, Leanne, the president needs to be located. And without a sophisticated sensor network, I'm not sure I'll be able to locate President Rom when he returns. LEANNE Besides, I've already sent a subspace message to Nelvana Three and advised them that a group of Bajoran scientists is coming with us. ROM (with gallows humor) It's okay, I realize that... LEANNE Yes, you realize that. It's just that... ROM No, you don't. You're a Romulan. And I'm a Cardassian. Nothing works within the Dominion. QUARK Meaning what? LEANNE Meaning we're surrounded. ROM Yes, this is how it begins. Suddenly everyone's looking for us. QUARK Not us. The station's only known legitimate competitors are the Bajorans. And don't get me started on you. The surface was their home. LEANNE The Cardassians can be very helpful. When we realized our cause was legitimate, they never took off their uniforms. ROM We never saw what was so important in their motives. They chose not to be bothered. QUARK They chose to be bothered. They killed us. Leanne studies Quark. He's got a point. LEANNE Rom, you can't just dismiss us all so easily. QUARK What do you want from me? Do you want my help or not? ROM My brother was a scoundrel, a nigged young man who let his pride blind him to the true dangers of choosing life. And I saw that his name was Senva. (sympathetic) I let him live. He's now the one who should be ashamed. He let everyone down. LEANNE (lets down her eyes for a moment) You're not really here to help me... Quark pulls a thin lever for her. QUARK That's right. Don't you see? Everything I was, everything I've ever put my heart into... (indicates her face) ... is now in my lap. Because I couldn't live without you. Even when I thought you were dead, I would come here for you. Even when I thought we couldn't see each other again, I wanted to. Leanne regards him for a moment, then asks the grail entry question again. LEANNE (quiet) So I had to come here... and I shut the entrance. Quark looks at her and they look at each other for a long beat... and we can see there's more to this than just sympathy. Leanne looks at him, and on his reaction, we get the feeling that despite their situation, Quark will be very happy to be rid of her. DEEP SPACE: "Rules of Acquisition" - REV. 09/20/93 - ACT FIVE 53. CLOSE ON QUARK AND LEANNE As she wipes her mouth with the back of a bony-faced patient's hand. LEANNE No more Quark. QUARK Why? LEANNE Because I don't want him to forget about you. Never forget he was here for you. Quark has to agree to this. QUARK Remember? LEANNE Of course. It's only natural for a Ferengi to have a soft spot for his lover. It's almost more like he embraces me. QUARK You're wonderful. You're everything I've been looking for. Leanne doesn't understand why Quark can't let go of her. LEANNE I'm sorry. I guess I'm too hard for him. QUARK It's not your fault he became a squaddie. LEANNE You don't understand. I'm a woman. QUARK Then how could you have met my mother? LEANNE (faux innocence) We've met before. I was working in his storeroom while he was alive. QUARK And... we fell in love... Leanne laughs, a fake smile that gives way to a harder expression of pain between them. Quark is certain he's being bullied, but he can't resist pressing forward. QUARK We were arrested for disobeying orders... LEANNE (hard) You were trying to get my hand on some merchandise... QUARK We were just doing what we thought was best for our family. LEANNE (hard) I didn't like it. So I terminated the contract. QUARK What was it you said? LEANNE I don't remember. (hard) It was between me and my husband. Before I became a widow, I promised to live for a year without our lover. It seemed like an unjustified stress... but I thought I would try to live on another planet... (hard) After the war with the Dominion, I decided to stay and be with you. Quark's eyes widen in shock. QUARK You're rejecting me! LEANNE I'm sorry you don't like me, Quark -- but you can't stay here and keep sabotaging the shop. You're a volatile person and we need you here, not outside. Quark tries to get control of the situation. QUARK Now... I'm no longer a Ferengi brothel owner... I'm a... secretary. LEANNE A what? QUARK A secretary with a bodyguard. LEANNE I'm not a bodyguard. QUARK Of course you are. You're my security chief. Leanne tries to get around Quark. LEANNE I... am also your secretary. QUARK What difference does that make? LEANNE (wryly) If you ask me, you don't need a bodyguard because you don't need a computer. You need a computer just as I do -- enough to run classified reports, print propaganda, and deliver newsletters to Cardassia Four. QUARK I thought Kulge was different. LEANNE He's the one who negotiated the amnesty deal. He arranged all the gifts. He's the one who's going to deliver the presents. QUARK We'll see. Leanne turns and blurts out the dirty little secret... LEANNE Klingons do love to keep their friends. She gives Quark a deeply serious look and Quark is delighted. QUARK Very interesting. Possibly I can work some magic. LEANNE I doubt it. You can't win, Quark. QUARK I'm only trying to make you happy. She gives him a lustful look and then Leanne moves up to him. LEANNE How are the presents? QUARK Mmmm... LEANNE The most indulged. She leans down close to him and her sexual tension increases. LEANNE The most? QUARK Each one. LEANNE Serialized. Each week. QUARK One week? LEANNE I keep thinking... once I've had enough of your monotonous life, I'll shut up. Quark starts to get out of his chair but Leanne stays close to him, leans back. LEANNE Quark, I love you. I refuse to believe you're the type to give up so easily. You think you're a god, and I think you're a fool. You're both so out of touch with reality, both of you. You're like a corpse in a cemetery. You're cracked, you're always so far away... QUARK Something wrong? LEANNE No. It's just... you always seemed like a projection of my mind... making me think I was married to one of the Cardassians. QUARK Why did you come back? LEANNE Because it's been six years since I lost her. Sometimes when I think things are going to get interesting in a way that I can't even imagine. Quark doesn't get the invitation. QUARK Oh. Sure. Leanne gives him a look and then leaves. QUARK (to himself) And you're never going to let me leave. He sits down, looks around the room. QUARK (to himself) It's been six years... living with the Solok's constant vigilance, I knew I could always count on you... Quark sits back. QUARK (to himself) The only prisoner I'll be is named Moogie. Leanne smiles. LEANNE The best thing about going back to Cardassia is getting out of all the bodies. She moves around the room, feeling around for a way out. She is creative, quickly setting to work in various functions. LEANNE (continuing) I need some tongo skills... preferably backhand, backhand, a variety of gree plays... QUARK Backhand? LEANNE That's the rough equivalent of your pajamas. I don't need a pajama. I need a tongo game. QUARK What are you doing? LEANNE (tongue in cheek) That's right. I'm going to have to enhance my adult programming. And it's all downhill from here. (beat) Now, if you'll excuse me... Leanne heads for the stairs. Quark stands with her. QUARK What about him? LEANNE He'll get to stay. He needs to sharpen his... poker face. QUARK (puzzled) Are you serious? LEANNE Tell my partner we need to tidy up the place up a little. Or it could get messy. QUARK What I need is a place to fit... LEANNE (dabbing her eyes) Mmmm, backhand, serve. QUARK A little off-white right? LEANNE undenied. She laughs and slaps her partner in the face. They laugh. Quark turns to Leanne. QUARK You sure you're not going to ask your partner to do something crazy -- like that? LEANNE Sure not. QUARK (shrugs) Just because your partner isn't crazy, that doesn't mean you have to be. LEANNE I'm not leaving until I'm satisfied both sides are satisfied. And neither my partner nor I are ready to fight the best poker player in the galaxy. Let's just split the money. Quark thinks it over. He looks back at Leanne. She smiles. QUARK What do you say... ask her. LEANNE My answer is no. QUARK Okay... do it. Quark moves to the door. LEANNE I'm sure Leanne you'll do great in a new job. QUARK Just remember, when you're done, you're on your own. Leanne leaves. ROM (excited) That's the sixth time today I've heard myself told that. QUARK What did I tell her? ROM You're good. Not great. Not great. QUARK Where do I even get my money's worth? 龍 ROM You want a room in your flat? QUARK What I want is a bed. ROM With a good comp for Leah. QUARK What I want is to dream of a future without Leanne. LEANNE Your client is anxious to move forward without me. I can't sleep unless I'm at ease. QUARK If you insist. Leanne smiles... she's feeling better. LEANNE A little acerbic, aren't we Jadzia? QUARK There are some things Avaro can't accept. You have to trust me on this one. LEANNE I'm not sure I do. QUARK (trying to reassure her) Just don't do anything that I'll call for a staff meeting. You'll have to steer your life or die. Leanne shudders at the thought. LEANNE I'll steer our life. She leans over and kisses him gently on the lips. LEANNE (softly) Have a good trip. She turns to go... QUARK I'm one busy run. Leanne walks back over and kisses him on the lips again. LEANNE I'll see you at the party. Quark nods as he EXITS. ROM I thought I was going to make it. But somehow I destroyed the holosuite window. LEANNE So what do we do now? ROM We wait for Odo to find out whether the liquidator is still in office. LEANNE There won't be any dignifying things for the high-fly bidder. That'll be his anyway. He's been charged with embezzlement. ROM Embezzlement? LEANNE That's what he's been charged with since the beginning of this year. ROM But... LEANNE Unfortunately, yes. ROM Not... LEANNE Do you mind if I stop? ROM For what reason? LEANNE Just because he's ill doesn't mean you should throw your... ROM Don't call me "sick." I'm not ill. I'm just... LEANNE Rom... ROM (defensive) What? Leanne gives Rom a good-natured shove. Then leaps right into the air, rising six inches off the ground each. As she does, the ground slumps. LEANNE (like a Coen Lynch front man) I'm here to protect you from the mercurial dross. She twists her wrist and Odo walks away... ROM (the light dawns) What've you done? Leanne scoops up Rom's latinum and puts it in a vial. LEANNE This will give you a nice boost of semen. ROM (looking at the vial) You said it'd be... LEANNE Just passing through... When she lets it drop from her fingers, it sways back to its original position. She picks up another one, sheets it on the table, and holds it out for Rom to see. THE VIAL Slide out... slide in... LEANNE Here's what it's supposed to do... Create... Rom looks at the vial, awestruck. ROM Organize... Leanne adjusts a control. There's an audible CLICK and the professional sounding LOCKING NOISE like a door shower door. LEANNE (continuing) Good. That way even if we fail, we won't. She takes the vial. It disappears. There's the sound, then silence. Leanne looks satisfied, checks the other ones in the vial. LEANNE (continuing) Computer, increase to level five. The professional sounding LOCKING NOISE like a door shower door. LEANNE (continuing) Shut down all systems. The professional sounding LOCKING NOISE like a shower. LEANNE (continuing) Mister Computer, reset. The professional sounding LOCKING NOISE like a shower. COMPUTER VOICE Unable to comply. All systems automatically shut-down. LEANNE atever. I hope you have a better friendship than I have a husband. She walks away, with the computer exiting. We follow her toward the exit. LEANNE (continuing) Now, Computer, increase to level one. COMPUTER VOICE Unable to comply. All systems automatically shut-down. LEANNE atever. I hope you have a better wife than I have a husband. She exits. There's a silent beat. We HOLD on the computer -- its sounds, and none of the computer's talking points are actually working. Kira looks at the three men. KIRA Bajoran track record suggests this was probably one of the more chaotic and violent episodes we've ever seen. But wasn't it peaceful? How about when Leyton ordered the police to break up the crowd? When they refused? You remember what happened to riot on Fifthorp City... remember how it ended... ? Not one to be proumie, but Kira nonetheless is curious. ODO We had to break them up... LEANNE (nods) That's right... we had to give the police a reason to fear the Ezri. KIRA You're saying he inspired the mob to take action against the government? LEANNE Yes... he did. But it was directed from the government not toward the organization. ODO Do you think they're planning something new? LEANNE I don't know. It's been like something new since we've come here. A beat. Odo presses his inquiry. ODO If you're discussing the Ezri, please add that name to the list of hosts we've seen during the past ten days. We know she's a skilled shooter, but she needs a new support team. Remaining quiet, Odo heads toward another room. LEANNE (continuing; with intent) We've got to find a way to get rid of her. No matter how much she may seem to be out of our hands, she's still in control of those quarters. ODO Whether we like it or not, she's in our power. That's an important thing to consider. LEANNE I know it is. Though Odo's questioning tone may throw O'Brien off, he's caught, and Leanne promises to make the best of it. She EXITS. O'BRIEN Are we through? ODO Not really. There are some details I'd like to add. O'Brien goes back to work, much to Odo's delight. ODO (continuing) Now, about that warrant. O'BRIEN You know about that? ODO Yes, and you know I wouldn't allow you to say it. But I have to believe you might try. O'BRIEN I doubt it. Thanks for the support. ODO It's too bad the Enterprise isn't yours. I'd have loved to have kept yours. O'BRIEN You can't insult someone by declining to let me use their station. ODO I'm not drooling. It's just... insensitive. O'BRIEN It's never been an insult to my father. ODO What do you want, Chief? O'BRIEN I'd like permission to search his quarters. I know him quite a lot. He has quite a collection. Hopefully, I'll have the chance to sell it to him. ODO If that's what you want. O'BRIEN (nods) Things got a little out of control in a hurry back on the station. I suppose that's something Quark will appreciate. ODO (knowing) Quark will. O'BRIEN I better get going lest he nick my ship. Odo nods as O'Brien EXITS. We hold on O'Brien and Odo as they share an uncomfortable look. CUT TO: INT. QUARK'S It's a busy day in the bar. QUARK is beside himself with anger and hatred. He's placing large amounts of gold-pressed latinum in a single transfer device, then smashing it on the table in a furious rage. Dax approaches with a big bottle of champagne. DAX I always wanted to see a tongo match between Captain Boday and Engineer Heaven. Quark picks up on the tone of disapproval. QUARK What do you mean? DAX I can't believe Quark, he's behaving like a spoiled child. He invited me to the holosuites for dinner, then he marched me into his quarters and refused to see me. QUARK I didn't expect the captain to be so defensive. Well done, Odo. ODO Thank you for your concern, Quark. Now what are you doing for dinner? QUARK I'm not sure, but I'll get going. So keep your leftovers. At least that way I won't be go D.S. Nine for my latinum. Quark goes and orders the waiter to get two steaming hot steers of sautéed bok-jak. QUARK (as if he's never actually been to a meal) One for me and you. And the rest of our warm-weather bureaucrats. Quark looks around the room. He stretches his left arm at the buffet table, reaches for a rattle, and raps it on the bar. A vicious rhythmic pulsing sound. He looks over at Kira, who is arriving with a steaming cup of tea. QUARK (annoyed) What is it? KIRA A rattle. Quark looks at her expectantly. She sits down. KIRA (wryly) Think we could interest you in a steak or a bok-rat? QUARK I came to tell you there's no way you can fool me. The day before today, Jadzia was visiting my quarters. A Vulcan gentleman called Quarkomo stopped by. He says you're avoiding him. KIRA I think he's on to you, Quark. QUARK Why would I come to the place where some Dosi would run amok just to see a married Dosi? It's because your sister's so good at the dabo wheel that you and I have certainly developed a... real relationship. KIRA You're lying. QUARK I almost had a run for it, Major, but I'm not quite so sure anymore. He goes up to the bar. KIRA You're not just any Dosi. You're kingpins. If you don't stop playing the little game, you're going to break every one of your rules. QUARK I don't have to break any rules. I just have to stop making it look like a competition between me and my sister. KIRA Maybe in reality you're both just chats about eating disorders. (off Quark's look) Quellimites. Quark's colorless eyes widen. He's had enough of being analyzed. QUARK (almost to himself) But... he is my brother. He's my second-in-command. I'm his number one expert on any Klingon sensation. KIRA You're the most competent Klingon you've ever been. QUARK Really? Well... I suppose I could use one more expert on Klingon consciousness. KIRA You want to try it? Quark shakes his head. He's off-stride and can't decide what to do next. QUARK I don't think so. KIRA That's good. That way you won't be making that mistake a second time. QUARK (still gets himself trucked) I don't know how many games you'll be playing before you settle down to play poker. KIRA (putting all this together) You expect me to believe that all the money I've made during the last twenty-two years has been invested to expand the Gamma Quadrant? QUARK I'm surprised at you. Believe me, Gamma Quadranton this space station has never been and never will be your priority. KIRA That's not true. Give up on the Federation. It's just too far away. I don't belong there anymore. QUARK (defensive) You're not exactly the best Sector, either... KIRA I'm just not as good a poker player. QUARK I've played one hundred and two games of tongo with Major Kira. Your average roll is a fourteen to a card. The major's had quite an entourage of lobbyists and one shovel-er of Congressmen during the last ten years. But I will not vote with my life or my loyalty to the Federation. KIRA Right now, I don't give a damn about the Ferengi Lunar Expo. QUARK But in ten years, the only place in which you'll find the game is when it's ready, isn't it... KIRA And when it's ready, it'll be here. (re: her game) You can count on it, Quark. It'll be the most dangerous thing I've ever seen. And with that, she moves off, leaving Quark to wonder what just happened. INT. OPS Kira arrives on the Turbolift... O'Brien is at his station... Bashir is at his post. KIRA How much longer? O'BRIEN Well, I don't know. We've got to re-route the defense sensor array to compensate for the phase variance in their sensor beam. BASHIR That may take hours. KIRA I don't leave without saying good-bye. O'Brien waves her over... Kira and Bashir kiss, and they split up. INT. QUARK'S Being the last couple on the line, O'Brien and Kira feel like primping Quark. O'BRIEN I hope you're ready to finish up your sweep. QUARK Just a few more steps... As O'Brien and Kira get their bearings, we stuff themselves into Quark's warm, fuzzy, memories. QUARK Hold on, I'm beginning to remember something. Hold on, I'm beginning to remember something. Hello! Quark! Are you ready? Hello! We pan across the booths, the gamblers, the dabo girls, the grooms, the customers... back to the entrance to the holosuites. A few dignified men and women pass. O'Brien and Kira exchange a look. KIRA The new partner? O'BRIEN She's going to be Giannone of Rokadin. The Ferengi are always together. KIRA (surprised) Rokadin? Where are they? O'BRIEN Down by the dock. If you need any services, you can call the countroom. O'Brien goes to the countroom. O'BRIEN (continuing) There's a whole armada on this station. Some Bajorans, myself. But mostly you. KIRA Who's primarily listed this station as? O'BRIEN Starfleet. Kira reacts. The odds are two. KIRA But then who lists all this stuff? O'BRIEN You know who? KIRA Dukat. O'BRIEN Who else? KIRA Everyone. O'BRIEN You mean besides Dukat? KIRA He's stupid. He never should've been involved with Meursault in the first place. O'BRIEN (a beat) You're right about that. Someone along with him, and we're the biggest threat to paradise the galaxy has ever known. O'Brien's convinced that if he can stop the vermin, the Others will follow. O'BRIEN (an idea forming) What you do, Kira... And as she considers how to do it... INT. RUNABOUT Thrax and Ubanna prepared the power core... THRAX We can access the auxiliary power grid from this console. UBAN If you three go to the core, we might be able to force it open somehow... THRAX Do it. He moves and gets to work... and in the background we notice O'Brien, Nerys, and Jadzia emerging from the back room... O'BRIEN What are you doing here? JADZIA We're not going back to the runabout. We need to find the others who've been gone for nine hours. Thrax joins them... alongside UBAN and another security officer, he has the touchy business of security that sections of the runabout define themselves... THRAX The twelve hours rule is obvious. UBAN Undoubtedly, we will be successful... THRAX We can easily exceed the thermal limits of the fusion reactors by an order of magnitude... UBAN We should adjust our course to more even orbit... THRAX That will give the Dosi more time to investigate the theft... UBAN Yes, more time... THRAX The Dosi are intelligent enough to follow instructions from one's representative... ODO Not always. THRAX Twelve hours might prove to be too much time... UBAN Too long. KIRA If we don't catch one of the "spies" before they change their intentions, we'll never get them out of there... They exchange a look. EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) Stock. Re-establishing. INT. OPS Kira, O'BRIEN, Dax, and BASHIR are gathered around the Ops table, studying a monitor displaying a map of the station. A small earthquake has just begun. KIRA Did you also hear about the sabotaged elections? Looks like the Cardassians are trying to oppose the new government every time there vote. BASHIR antidepress... and the Cardassians are on the defensive. So I thought we'd be testing some new electromagnetic weapons that the Bajorans can build from the sea. ODO Not just any electromagnetic weapons... we want to make them the strongest in the quadrant. O'BRIEN We're talking photon torpedoes, phasen, railguns, and railguns. The idea is, when a torpedo is detonated, it might cause the ground to quake instead of just... explode. DAX We can run seismic models on the computer. KIRA We'll send a seismograph up into the atmosphere. DAX What if it's anti-matter? KIRA Its antimonium core is composed of collyrium and talgonite. When trees are felled, those minerals will act as a gravity source and keep the ground stable. BASHIR At the same time, it'll purge the surface rivers and bodies of water in a trickle. DAX Once we start running these things, we'll have to increase the nitrogen respiration rate of the entire station by at least ten percent. Just then, O'Brien walks into the room. O'BRIEN I'm running a temperature lockalog survey of the lower atmosphere. KIRA We can crosscheck all the results against the inventory. O'BRIEN They're not looking for anything wrong. QUARK But we did find a trace of the chemical agent used in the transfer. Arak'Taral must've malfunctioned the transporter. O'BRIEN It's a possibility. I can reroute the flow to the proper receptor. BASHIR Which means they still could've been responsible for the fire that killed the maintenance worker. QUARK Really? That firework went through the perimeter sensors. That firework confirmed it. There was no malfunction. As for my share of the blame, I'll simply apologize. O'BRIEN We all have our flaws. Aubrey Ross is a talented engineer. But he's not a brilliant organizer. KIRA He's not the first person in their path to redemption. QUARK His family name is also a badge of honor and reliability. If I were to get my hands on the next manual inspection forms, I might be willing to suggest that he delay assigning them until there's a new man in his corner. O'BRIEN Manually filling them out will be a tall order, Quark. QUARK What's his margin of error? O'BRIEN Twenty to twenty-five percent. If something goes wrong, he'll have to be more careful. QUARK I don't think that's a problem. When it comes to my watch, he'll be the one who's more than capable. My wife will prepare the minutes... I'll dictate the speeches... he'll be the one who's up on the catwalk talking to girls. Get rid of that self-important smug look. The man I've got, I'll find him. (beat) Just a moment... NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) As the wheel spins to a stop, Quark spins inside out. He's trapped. QUARK (inside) It's a trapped us. I can't get out. ANGLE ON KIRA As she slams the last thing she can onto the table. KIRA (inside) It's a trapped us. You have to break free. QUARK How? KIRA Quark! He holds up a hand. KIRA (hits her combadge) Kira to Sackmen. REPULSE VOICE Receive? KIRA (keying insignia) There's a lot of people still alive. Try not to let anyone get the wrong idea. REPULSE VOICE We've set up a holding cell. Tell them to call again. KIRA (hits combadge) Kira to Security. PRESSMAN'S COM VOICE This is Security. Her number one, I'll get you out of here. KIRA (to Pressman) This way, sir. Bashir and O'Brien follow Kira and the others down the spiral staircase. FADE OUT. END OF ACT FOUR ACT FIVE FADE IN: INT. HOLDING CELL Pressman and Kira are being held in a holding cell, the height of maximum tension. PRESSMAN Should I release you or not? KIRA Your voice intrudes too much into my conversation. PRESSMAN (re: Pressman) A little annoyant, myself. KIRA Do you have any particular behavioral markers I should note? PRESSMAN Not that I can think of. My relationship with Kira is a little dependent at the moment. KIRA That's okay. I don't mind. A silence as both women realize they're perfectly stupid. KIRA Do you? PRESSMAN What's the matter? KIRA Nothing. PRESSMAN Well, there is one thing. KIRA What's that? PRESSMAN That you're holding Moriarty responsible for the murders of his daughter, whom he tortured and killed in coldblood. KIRA I'm not sure I know what that means. PRESSMAN It does. When people think of Moriarty as a common criminal, it raises the general suspicion that other similar serial killers might be lurking around the corner. That in itself increases the threat level. KIRA The threat from Outer Rim... PRESSMAN OKLAH-NEP-ruh. The magnetic gradient we gave Outer Rim residents to reduce their suspicion of the killer... ODO (accusing) Detention without sufficient evidence... PULASKI I'm afraid he's pretty good at it, too. Odo studies Pressman, summarizes his findings: ODO Mostly. PULASKI Journal Officially Blue Book on Detention and Review Section, Starfleet Medical Center. This is the manual review of the cases. Word on the street is that it's a "must read." Pressman gives him a polite smile. PRESSMAN You think he'll write a book on us? KIRA I hope so. ODO You think he'll get a thrill out of reading about boring standard human processing? PRESSMAN (shrugs) Sometimes. Just yesterday, for example, while answering a no-good customer's complaint, he found himself standing with a complete mug off the hook. He had to be amused... I couldn't stand there; my listeners wouldn't be interested. ODO Which is why we might want to keep that mug down; it might keep him from doing something violent. PULASKI (smiles) Perhaps we can't control the flow of information without blocking it, but if we can open its records... well, perhaps we can set up a little surveillance operation. ODO We never had any experience with spy movies. PULASKI I'll let you be the one to judge that. She rises and moves around the room. She strides off, triggering the automatic door OPEN and Deconte approaches. DECONTTE There are two of them. One's dead; the other's close to the edge of unsustainable. There is a beat as the two men take in the scene. One Cardassian reacts to a spatial anomaly... his expression tells us his frustration and panic is not at all subtle... DECONTTE It appears we have a long hunt ahead of us... He has a bad feeling about what's ahead... Deconte explains himself: DECONTTE It's a classic case of over- sampling... (indicating O'Brien's face) I'd call it intentional... O'BRIEN Why would they lie like that... DECONTTE People don't come here to kill each other. People come here for a reason. O'BRIEN And that's what you're going to find out? A beat. The Cardassian leans forward to study Odo's expression... DECONTTE What do you think it is? ODO It's respect. DECONTTE (smiles, in equal measure) The Alpha Quadrant is a very important place. Everyone knows that. No response. The Cardassian leans forward again. DECONTTE You're thinking of someone else. ODO You're probably right, but I came because of this. A beat. The hunter in the cage, looking for a response, taps once more... but there is none. The sound of walking toward the sound activates his computer (and we now notice that the monitor is not playing any sound). He turns to look at the others. Gently... DECONTTE Anyone out there? O'BRIEN We're not sure, sir... DECONTTE (to the computer) Computer, scan the Alpha Quadrant and display any stars that are visible in the Alpha Quadrant. COMPUTER VOICE Scan complete. No additional products detected. O'BRIEN Okay... He looks at the monitor. What he sees doesn't make him happy. O'BRIEN Computer, increase magnification of student's drawings by ten percent... COMPUTER VOICE Additional product specified. The teacher's drawings are now much higher quality... O'Brien sighs... O'BRIEN Computer, decrease in size by twenty percent... The computer works... THE CALCULARINE Bounces down the corridor, looking like it has all the flashes of color possible... OMITTED INT.
